Women’s Lacrosse – Game Preview – Cardinals Host Bobcats in MEC Opener

WHEELING, W.Va. – Sunday afternoon marks the beginning of 2017 Mountain East Conference play for the Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team. 
 
WJU welcomes the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats for a 12 p.m. match. 
 
2016 meeting: 
Wheeling Jesuit claimed the 2016 meeting, 13-10, over the Bobcats in Buckhannon, West Virginia. 

The Bobcats took a brief 2-1 lead just seven minutes into action but Elizabeth Hales tied the game less than two minutes later. Paige Plesich capped a 3-0 Cardinal run and gave the visitors a 4-2 advantage with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Just before the first half ended, Olivia Krock scored and WJU led 7-4 at the break. 
 
Hales scored two more goals in the second half while Markie Wright and Kori Hickman each scored once to help WJU past the Bobcats, 13-10. 
 
Hales and Hickman each finished with five point outings. Plesich scored twice and Wright and Krock each finished with one. Lyndsay Carpenter scooped up a team-high three ground balls while Krock, Wright, Brianna Wahle and Taelor Mailoux all finished with two ground balls. Maire Austin stopped six shots for WJU. 
 
Sunday game notes: 
Wheeling Jesuit comes into the weekend 3-7 on the season and off a 14-3 loss at Slippery Rock on Wednesday. The Cardinals are 3-1 at home and have outscored their opponents 39-26 in the three victories. 
 
West Virginia Wesleyan hosts Notre Dame College on Friday, April 7 before traveling to Wheeling on Sunday. Heading into the weekend of action, Wesleyan is 1-7 on the season with its lone win coming over Keiser, 18-12, on March 4. The Bobcats have since dropped six straight outings by 10 or more goals. 
 
Stat leaders: 
Elizabeth Hales leads the WJU offense with 24 goals and 12 assists for 36 points. Mary Burns ranks second in goals with 10 and has six assists, 10 ground balls, five caused turnovers, and 22 draw controls to her credit. Paige Plesich has eight goals and five assists while Kori Hickman has 12 assists and four goals for her 16 points. 
 
Lyndsay Carpenter continues to lead the WJU defense with 29 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers. Holly Deckert has 25 ground balls and 16 forced turnovers while Taylor Quigg has 13 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers on the season. Maire Austin has started all 10 games in net and has totaled 72 saves and 20 ground balls. 
 
Natalie Schaffner leads Wesleyan with 24 points on the season. Schaffner has scored 16 times and assisted on eight other goals. Kim Lubic has scored 14 goals and dished out three assists for her 17 points. Madison Duvall has 15 points and Hannah Antonelli has 13. 
 
On the defense, Schaffner has scooped up a team-best 17 ground balls to date. She has also won 28 draw controls and forced eight turnovers. Caitlyn Baicar has caused a Bobcat-high 11 turnovers while picking up 13 ground balls and winning seven draw controls.
