Slippery Rock Shoots Past WJU, 14-3

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – After the Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team jumped to an early 1-0 lead, Slippery Rock would rattle off an 11-0 run over a 22-minute span to shoot its way past the Cardinals, 14-3.  
 
Elizabeth Hales put the Cardinals on the board first, but Slippery Rock had an answer for the early Wheeling Jesuit lead. Mary Burns found Hales for the game's first strike (25:51), but Slippery Rock responded in full force. 
 
Five goals in a six-minute span helped the Rock to a 5-1 advantage with eight minutes remaining in the first half. 


In the final eight minutes of the opening half, Slippery Rock would add an additional five goals to take a 10-1 lead into the break. 
 
Less than two minutes into the second half, Slippery Rock had scored its 11th goal of the game to give the Rock a 10-goal advantage. 
 
Junior defender Lyndsay Carpenter scored off a free-position attempt with 12:43 remaining to give WJU its second goal of the evening and cut the Rock's lead to nine, 11-2. 
 
The Rock would score three more times to take a 14-2 lead with 4:05 remaining, but WJU would claim the last score of the evening. 


Burns fired a shot and found the back of the net with 1:11 remaining, but the Cardinals fell, 14-3, to the Rock. 
 
Burns led the WJU offense with two points, as she scored once and assisted on another. Burns also won three draw controls, forced a turnover, and picked up one ground ball. Hales and Carpenter each finished with one goal. 
 
Maire Austin stopped 10 saves in the net and picked up seven ground balls. Holly Deckert finished with five ground balls. Carpenter added three caused turnovers to her stat line while Brianna Wahle caused two turnovers of her own. Olivia Krock finished with a shot, four draw controls, and one ground ball. Kori Hickman won two draw controls and Kate Calder won one. 
 
The Cardinals return to action to begin Mountain East Conference play on Sunday, April 9. WJU welcomes West Virginia Wesleyan for a 12 p.m. match.
