Lee Six-Goal Night and Early Run Takes Cardinals Past Senators

ELKINS, W.Va. – A big individual performance and an early scoring binge spelled Cardinals success. On the offense of six Matt Lee goals, the Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team rode an early run of goals to an 18-7 victory at Davis & Elkins Wednesday night.

After an opening Senators (2-9) score, the Cardinals (3-7) found the net six-straight times over a 15-minute period of time for a 6-1 advantage. The visitors added a 10-1 second run covering the majority of the second stanza for the win.

"It was definitely a great win to start the week," said WJU coach Landon DelPrince

Lee totaled six goals with two of WJU's six in the initial spurt and three more an assisted on another in the final six tallies to put the match away.

Dereck Downs started the Cardinals surge and produced four goals and three assists. The WJU Male Athlete of the Week Jordan Getz assisted on three goals and scored a pair of his own.

Jamison Smith fired home two goals and McLean Fitzmartin totaled three assists.

Michael Tighe and Travis Getz contributed a goal and an assist apiece. Michael Schonhiutt and Peter Slattery had the final WJU scores and Oscar Ortega dished the final helper.

Goalie Kellen McMahon registered 11 saves of Senators shots on goal. WJU outshot D&E 67-48 and 28-18 on attempts on goal.

Matt O'Dwyer produced three goals and an assist for the top Senators player.

After D&E put the first goal on the scoreboard at 3:18 into the match, Downs wasted no time in answering 22 seconds later. The junior attackman added another in what turned out to be six-straight Cardinals goal with Lee netting the third and sixth scores for a 6-1 lead at 11:53 in the second frame.

Leading 6-3, Jordan Getz scored twice 27 seconds apart for the 8-3 intermission advantage.

The Senators registered the initial second-half goal, but the Cardinals, again, answered with four in a row, including a pair from Downs, for a 12-4 margin.

Following a D&E goal, WJU finished its scoring with six more unanswered tallies where Lee had three of them.

WJU returns to Bishop Schmitt Field this Saturday when it hosts Ohio Valley at 1 p.m.

"Now, it's time to shift gears to Ohio Valley. We have to make the most out of the next two practices. It's important that we continue to find success each and every day moving forward," finished DelPrince.
