Chapman Leads Cardinals Sweep of Falcons, Clinch MEC Playoff Spot

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Mallory Chapman provided both the Cardinals offense and the pitching power Friday. Chapman homered in both games and earned the circle wins as Wheeling Jesuit swept Notre Dame College, 2-1 and 4-2, to clinch a Mountain East Conference softball playoff spot.

Chapman hit an opening solo home run and added the game-winning two-run blast in the late contest, while she logged all 14 innings to win both games from the Falcons (16-24/12-18 MEC North).

With the two victories, WJU (21-23) improved to 15-15 in the MEC North and secured the Division's second place finish to qualify for next weekend's Conference tournament. The pair of WJU wins also pushed the team over the 20-win mark for the third-straight season.

In the circle, Chapman (15-15) allowed only one earned and nine hits over 14 frames. The junior fanned 11 Falcons and walked only two.

At the plate, Chapman's two home runs were her only two hits in seven at bats, but she made them count with three RBI.

Morgan Stohlman doubled and singled twice. Both Jackie Cramer and Dana Achille lined three hits apiece. Michaela Miller and Molly Welsh singled in each contest.

WJU completes its regular season schedule with a 1 p.m. Sunday doubleheader at Urbana.

Game 1
After two scoreless innings, Chapman connected on a solo shot to right field with two outs for the game's first run in the top of the third.

In the fourth frame with one out, Achille singled and ran to third on Stohlman's double to right center. With two away, Welsh singled past short stop to make it 2-0 WJU.

With one out in the home fifth, Halli Swiger singled to center to cut the margin in half, 2-1. Chapman set down the final two outs and then proceeded to retire the next six in the final two innings, including fanning the final two, for the 2-1 win.

Game 2
WJU broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. After an out, Achille, Stohlman and Miller laced three-straight hits to load the bases. Rachel Conrad singled and drove in two for a Cardinals 2-0 lead.

Notre Dame College answered with a pair of unearned runs in the home half of the fourth to tie the game, 2-2.

In the fifth, Cramer singled with one out and trotted around the bases after Chapman crushed a two-run homer to right center and a 4-2 lead.

Chapman allowed a hit in each of the final three innings, but no damage was done for her second win of the day.
