Cardinals Bats Thrive Against Blue Knights, Post 3rd-Straight Sweep

URBANA, Ohio – The Cardinals bats continued to thrive on Sunday afternoon. Wheeling Jesuit touched home 24 times and finished its regular season with the third-straight sweep of the week with a 10-6 and 14-5 wins at Urbana.

Courtney Rogers drove four of the 10 WJU (23-23/17-15 Mountain East Conference North) runs scored in four-run third and sixth-run fourth opening game. Urbana (16-26/12-20 MEC North) managed only two single runs in its last four at bats.

In the late contest, the Cardinals plated runs in five of the seven innings, including four multi-run offensive turns. Leading 3-0 heading to the top of the fourth, Dana Achille belted a three-run home run as part of a five-run frame to break open the contest, 8-0.

On the day, WJU recorded 27 hits in the 14 innings. Rogers swung the top stick with a 6 for 8 afternoon, including a pair of doubles and five RBI.

Cassie Holstein added 4 singles in eight trips with five runs scores. Jackie Cramer, Mallory Chapman, who had a double, and Ashley Ledbetter posted three hits apiece.

Achille's two hits were the extra base variety with a three-run home run and RBI double. Both Erin Unterbrink and Candace Drzik lined their first collegiate hits with run-scoring doubles in game two.

Chapman won her 16th game in the opener, while Rogers improved to 3-0 in the late for WJU pitching.

WJU moves into the MEC Tournament on a seven-game winning streak, including two earlier MEC road sweeps this week at West Liberty Thursday and at Notre Dame College Friday. The Cardinal will be the No. 2 seed in the MEC North and they will face the Cavaliers of UVa.-Wise in next weekend's First Round held in Salem, Va.

Game 1
In a scoreless contest, WJU put four scores on the third-inning scoreboard. Chapman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, before Rogers lined a two-run single to center field. Morgan Stohlman doubled to right field to drive home the fourth run and a 4-0 lead.

Urbana answered back with four runs of its own in the home third.

The Cardinals went back to work in the fourth. Cramer and Chapman drove run-scoring, back-to-back singles up the middle, before Rogers sliced a two-run double to right field for an 8-4 lead. Achille added a RBI double to left and Michaela Miller singled up the middle for the fifth and sixth runs in the at bat and 10-4 margin.

The Blue Knights scored single runs in the fifth and sixth, but Chapman held them there by retiring the final four hitters.

Game 2
WJU never trailed in game two just like the opener. A Ledbetter second-inning RBI hit and two more scores in the third made it 3-0 visitors.

In the fourth, Cramer lined another RBI hit up the middle and scored on a home error of Chapman's bat. Rogers walked and set up Achille's three-run blast over the fence for the 8-0 lead.

Leading 8-2 in the fifth, Chapman hit a RBI double and Rogers drove her home as part of three more WJU runs and 11-2 score.

Unterbrink and Drzik finished the Cardinals scoring in the seventh with RBI doubles.
