Cardinals Blast Four Homers, Post Second Sweep of ‘Toppers

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Cardinals offense was on display Wednesday afternoon. The Wheeling Jesuit softball team blasted four home runs, scored 19 combined runs and posted its second sweep of rival West Liberty, 11-4 and 8-6.

Michaela Miller, Dana Achille and Mallory Chapman all belted two-run round-trippers as part of the Cardinals (19-23/13-15 Mountain East Conference North) 14-hit opener. WJU scored three runs in each of the second, third and seventh at bats for the 11-4 win.

In the late contest, WJU rode its biggest first-inning outburst of the season with a seven spot. The visitors sent 11 batters to the plate, including a Courtney Rogers grand slam homer for a 7-0 lead. After leading 8-0, Erin Unterbrink came in and shut the door with a perfect final 1.1 innings to save the contest and stop a West Liberty comeback attempt, 8-6.

WJU's 11-run opener was its highest single-game run total and the 19 total Wednesday runs are the most in a 2017 doubleheader. The Cardinals also lined 27 total hits in the 14 innings.

Jackie Cramer paced the visitors' offense with a 5 for 9 day with two RBI. She teamed with Cassie Holstein, Rogers, Achille and Chapman for 20 of the team's 27 hits.

Rogers went 4 for 6 with the grand slam, double and four RBI. Holstein was 4 for 7 with a double and three runs. Achille finished 4 for 5 with five total RBI, two RBI on the home run in the opener and one on the game-two double, while Chapman logged with the two-run homer and two singles.

Miller's home run was the sophomore first career home run. Briana Grimes and Molly Welsh both singled two times.

Chapman (13-15) picked up the wins in both games, while Unterbrink registered her second save of the year to complete the sweep.

The Cardinals complete its regular season on the road this weekend. WJU starts the two doubleheaders at Urbana Saturday at 1 p.m.

Game 1
The Hilltoppers struck first. In the home first, West Liberty scored a pair of runs.

WJU answered back with a three-run, second frame capped by Miller's two-run blast to left center field for the 3-2 lead.

The Cardinals doubled their runs in the third. With two outs, Achille drove in Taylor DiPerna with her sixth home run of the year, before Holstein drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 6-2 contest.

After a WLU run in the third, Achille added a fourth-inning sac fly and a RBI single up the middle to score Rogers, who doubled, in the sixth to make it 8-3.

Chapman connected on a no-doubt, seventh-inning, two-run homer and completed the win in the circle for the 11-4 win.

Game 2
WJU sent 11 hitters to the plate to start game two and seven of them touched home. Holstein, Cramer and Chapman all singled to start and all trotted home on Rogers' grand slam to left field. Achille added a run-scoring double and Cramer a RBI single for the 7-0 margin.

Cramer drove home Holstein, who doubled to left field, in the third for an 8-0 advantage.

West Liberty mounted a solid comeback with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to make it 8-6. Unterbrink relieved Rogers and retired the final four home batters for the save.
