Late-Game Comeback Gives Cardinals Home Finale Split with Falcons

WHEELING, W.Va. – After Fairmont State held on for a 6-5 opening win, Wheeling Jesuit completed its second comeback attempt with a five-run fifth inning and 9-6 late victory for the Monday softball split.

Following four Falcons (16-26/9-15 Mountain East Conference North) unearned first-frame runs, the Cardinals (17-23/11-15 MEC North) battled back the rest of the first contest. Trailing 6-4 in the fifth inning, WJU loaded the bases with no outs, but it received only a RBI single by pinch hitter Rachel Conrad, before FSU's Hannah Absalom shut the door on the home team with the final six outs.

After a second four-run opening inning and behind 6-2 heading to the home fifth, the Cardinals rallied. With one unearned run on the scoreboard, Mallory Chapman lined a single past the FSU second baseman, before Brianna Grimes highlighted the five-run outburst with a double into the left field corner and Taylore DiPerna singled past the short stop three batters later as WJU took its first home lead, 7-6. WJU added another insurance pair on a Chapman sac fly and a Courtney Rogers single to make it 9-6. Rogers and Chapman held the Falcons to a single hit over the final 3.1 innings for the Cardinals win.

At the plate, Cassie Holstein led the home club again with a 4 for 7 daywhich included a double in each game and four runs. Jackie Cramer went 3 for 5 with three runs and an RBI.

Both Mikaela Miller and Chapman drove in three runs. Miller, who had three singles total, drove in her three on two game one singles, while Chapman lofted a pair of sac flies and a run-scoring single of her two hits. Rogers contributed two singles and a double and two RBI.

WJU completes its season series against West Liberty with a 5 p.m. road doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

Game 1
FSU took advantage of three WJU fielding errors and put up four first-inning runs.

In the home first, Morgan Stohlman drew a bases-loaded walk, but that was all for a 4-1 score.

After a single third-frame visiting run, Dana Achille led off the home part of the inning with a single through the left side. Stohlman singled to left and Ashley Ledbetter was hit by a pitch to load the bags with two outs. Miller lined the ball back up the middle to score two and a 5-3 margin.

Fairmont State added one more in the fifth and WJU answered on another Miller RBI hit and 6-4 score. Then in the sixth, Holstein doubled down the left field line, Cramer laid down a bunt single and Chapman walked. Conrad lined her pinch hit single for one run, before the Falcon's Absalom retired the next three hitters. The FSU pitcher completed her first save of the year with a one-two-three seventh.

Game 2
Fairmont State accomplished a four-run first for the second time, but one three hits and only one home error. Rogers lined a hard RBI hit off the Falcons' second base man to score Cramer and 4-1 margin.

Chapman lofted a third-inning sac fly to score Holstein to pull within 4-2.

The Falcons pushed a pair off a walk and two hits in the fourth to make it 6-2.

After a scoreless inning, the Cardinals put together their big five-run outburst and seven runs total in two trips to the plate.
