Rams Hit Way Past Cardinals on ‘Senior Day’

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Shepherd Rams used a 24-hit attack and hit past Wheeling Jesuit on the softball diamond Sunday afternoon. The Rams took a tight 3-2 opener, before they prevailed 11-3 in six innings in the late contest over the Cardinals.

A Courtney Rogers run-scoring single and a double steal tied the opener for the Cardinals (16-22/10-14 Mountain East Conference North Division), but the Rams (29-16/15-9 MEC North) took advantage of a home error and plated the game-winner in the sixth.

Dana Achille cut the WJU deficit in half with a two-run, third-frame double, 4-2. Shepherd answered with a second four-run innings in the fourth and finished the contest with three sixth-inning scores for the 11-3 late victory.

WJU started the festive 'Senior Day' as it honored its six seniors – Achille, Kelsi Thompson, Morgan Stohlman, Kelly Albers, Rachel Conrad and Amy Rotriga.

Cassie Holstein paced the WJU 12 hits with a 4 for 6 day, including two runs and a stolen base. Jackie Cramer added two singles, a run and a stolen base.

Achille and Mallory Chapman added a double each, while Stohlman, Molly Welsh, Rogers and Mikaela Miller all singled one time.

The Cardinals wrap up their home schedule with a 1 p.m. makeup doubleheader Monday afternoon versus the Falcons of Fairmont State.

Game 1
Shepherd's Alexandra Witt doubled home lead-off hitter Kaitlyn Konopka, while pounded an infield single to shortstop to start the game.

After one out, Chapman looped a double into the right field corner. Pinch runner Brianna Grimes tied the contest on a two-out Rogers single down the left field line.

The Rams edged back in front with an unearned fifth-inning run off two Cardinals errors to make it 2-1.

With two down, Cramer and Holstein had back-to-back singles to put runners on the corner. The two speedy Cardinals pulled off a double steal to tie the game, 2-2.

Shepherd again went right back in front. Off a lead-off WJU error, the visitors eventually took the lead on a two-out single through the left side of the infield for the 3-2 advantage.

WJU managed only one base runner in its final two at bats to end the game.

Chapman went the distance for WJU. She allowed nine hits with only one earned run to go with five strikeouts.

Game 2
Following two scoreless frames, the Rams belted five hits and produced four runs in the third.

With one out, Welsh singled and Holstein added a bunt single as the next WJU batter. After the second out, Achille lined a two-run double to right center to cut the margin to 4-2.

Shepherd put up its second four-run at bat in the fourth with three scores coming via the unearned variety for an 8-2 difference.

WJU managed only a second double steal of the day when Holstein raced home in the eventual 11-3 defeat.
