Falcons Hold off Cardinals Edge Two One-Run Games

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – A two extra-base hit, two-run at bat and enough to hang on in the late game. Fairmont State edged a pair of one-run wins over Wheeling Jesuit softball on Sunday, 2-1 and 6-5.

After the Cardinals (13-13/7-7 Mountain East Conference North) put a run on the fifth-inning scoreboard from a Mallory Chapman single to right field, the home Falcons (11-17/4-6 MEC North) answered with two doubles for a pair of runs and a 2-1 lead. WJU put runners in its final two at bats, but failed to tie the game.

In the late contest, WJU mounted a furious comeback, but fell one late hit shy of pulling out the victory. Fairmont State powered four runs in the first and another two in the second for a 6-0 advantage. The Cardinals' Victoria Scott doubled in two, before she stole home, and Jackie Cramer added another for a 6-4 score. WJU stranded a combined five runners, two on third base in the fourth and fifth frames, before Cramer singled home another. It was all the closer the visitors could get.

At the plate, Molly Welsh lined five singles in nine at bats. Cramer and Cassie Holstein contributed four singles apiece – Cramer with two RBI and a run and Holstein scored twice.

Scott had WJU's lone extra-base hit with the two-run double, while Chapman, Dana Achille and Morgan Stohlman had one hit.

Chapman (9-7) took a tough game one loss where she allowed two earned runs on seven hits and six strikeouts. For the day, Mallory added 1.2 frames of game two with one hit and two strikeouts.

WJU has off until next Saturday afternoon, April 8, when it hosts UVa-Wise in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
