Golden Eagles Take Pair of One Run Games from Cardinals

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – For the third and fourth consecutive games, the Wheeling Jesuit baseball team lost by a single run.

WJU fell to the University of Charleston Golden Eagles by scores of 2-1 and 3-2 on Sunday.

Game 1 notes:
Winning pitcher – Levi Nash
Losing pitcher – Josh Bell

Recap:
Wheeling Jesuit and Charleston played two scoreless frames to begin the afternoon. In the home half of the third, Charleston struck for the game's first run.

In the top half of the sixth, Logan Schickler tied the game at one apiece with a RBI groundout to second base, scoring Christopher Brake.

Charleston, however, regained the lead with a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth. The Golden Eagles would shut the door on the Cardinals in the top half of the seventh, and win game one, 2-1.

Josh Bell took the loss for the Cardinals, as he threw six innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs. Bell struck out two hitters and walked one.

Ryan Blessard led the WJU offense with a 2-3 effort in game one. Brake, Dalton Davis, Schickler, and Adam Dennison each finished with a base hit.

Game 2 notes:
Winning pitcher – Brandon Harris
Losing pitcher – Cody Hudson

Recap:
Charleston grabbed a 2-0 lead over the Cardinals in the home half of the fourth. The Cardinals would have an answer, however, scoring twice in the top of the sixth inning.

Drake May drew a lead-off walk before Brake advanced him to second on a ground out to the pitcher. Dillon Sunnafrank doubled to deep left field and May scored from second for the Cardinals first run. After Dalton Davis flew out to center, Matthew Angelini singled to the left-centerfield gap to score Sunnafrank, the game-tying run.

Neither club would score in the seventh or eighth innings, but Charleston tallied the game winning and sweep clinching run in their last at bat. A leadoff single followed by a fielder's choice and a sacrifice bunt placed runners on first and second. Charleston's game winning run crossed two batters later off a WJU error.

Sunnafrank and Angelini led the Cardinal offense with 2-4 efforts in game two. Davis and Christopher Minder each finished 1-4 at the plate to round out the six Cardinal hits.

Kyle Rees started the game and threw 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit. Brian Shaw tossed 4.2 innings and gave up two earned runs. Cody Hudson was hit with the loss, as he threw 2.1 innings of two-hit baseball, but the Golden Eagles scored in the bottom of the ninth.
