Ashland Holds off Two WJU Late-Comeback Attempts

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Ohio – In the final non-conference doubleheader of the season, Wheeling Jesuit's two comeback attempts came up short as host Ashland held on for two close Wednesday softball games, 5-3 and 1-0.

Mikaela Miller sliced her second game-one triple and scored two hitters later in the visiting seventh frame, but the Cardinals (16-20) could put no more runs on the board in the two-run loss.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning of the late game, Ashland (25-18) threw out Cassie Holstein at the plate after Courtney Rogers' fourth hit of the day to end the game and preserve the Eagles win.

Rogers posted a 4 for 6 afternoon with a run scored. Miller tripled two times in the opener with two runs and a RBI.

Holstein added three singles in seven at bats, while Jackie Cramer contributed two hits and drove home a run. Mallory Chapman had the Cardinals other extra base hit with a double. Molly Welsh, Taylor DiPerna and Ashley Ledbetter each singled.

In the game-two circle, Erin Unterbrink suffered a tough-luck loss. The sophomore allowed only five hits and an earned run over six innings.

WJU returns home Friday night in a 6 p.m. doubleheader against Shepherd.

Game 1
Behind 1-0 in the top of the second, Rogers singled to right field and was sacrificed to second. With two outs, Miller lined a run-scoring triple to left field, before she would race home on a Cramer single for a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles battled back with a single fourth-inning score and two more in the fifth for a 5-2 advantage.

Miller led off the seventh with a triple to center and scored on Holstein's bunt single. After a Welsh walk, Ashland retired the next two WJU hitters to end the game, 5-3.

Game 2
The Cardinals put runners on first and second after a Holstein walk and Welsh single in the top of the first, but failed to bring them home.

Ashland pushed across the lone tally on a one-out single in the home third frame.

WJU put two runners on base in the fifth and loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but again, it could not have any runners touch home plate.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Holstein singled to center and moved to second base on a wild pitch. After the second out, Dana Achille walked. Rogers stepped to the plate and line a single where Holstein was thrown out at home on the hit to end the game.
