Rams Take Doubleheader to Split Weekend Series

WHEELING, W.Va. – Shepherd University took Saturday's doubleheader from the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals to split the weekend series at two games apiece.

Shepherd shut the Cardinals out, 8-0, in game one before erupting for 20 runs in their game two victory.

Game 1 notes:
Winning pitcher – Ryan Pansch (6-0)
Losing pitcher – Brian Shaw (0-2)

Recap:
A run in the first inning followed by four in the fifth gave Shepherd a 5-0 lead after two frames. The final three runs were added in the fourth inning.

Shaw tossed two innings and was tagged for five earned runs. Tanner Evans threw three innings and gave up three runs while Logan Menear completed two hitless innings to end the game.

Christopher Brake led the offense with a two-hit effort. Dalton Davis, Cody Hudson, Matthew Angelini, Christopher Minder and Adam Dennison each added a base hit in game one.

Game 2 notes:
Winning pitcher – John Bentley (4-4)
Losing pitcher – Kyle Rees (0-3)

Recap:
Shepherd scored on a solo home run in the first inning and would never look back.  The Rams tacked on another single run in the third before scoring sixth in the fourth. Three runs scored in the seventh, five in the eighth, and four in the ninth to reach the 20-run mark.

The Cardinals did not go down without a fight, though, as they scored six times in their last at bat.

Dillon Sunnafrank singled up the middle to begin the rally before Dalton Davis later doubled off the left center field wall to send Sunanfrank to third. RJ Harris was hit by a pitch, and Christopher Minder later singled to center to score Sunnafrank. Adam Dennison flew out to right, scoring Davis. Cody Hudson reached on an error by the second basemen, which scored Harris. Carter Sancomb drew a walk, and Christopher Brake hit a liner to the right fielder, which was dropped, to score Hudson and Minder. Sunnafrank returned to the plate and doubled to deep left to score pinch runner Jeffery Patrick.

Sunnafrank led the game two attack with a 3-5 effort including a pair of doubles. Drake May tacked on a pair of singles while Davis, Minder and Dennison each finished with one hit.

Kyle Rees took the loss, as he lasted three innings and allowed eight runs to score. Nick Luciano, Brock Wenger and Josh Bell combined to throw the final six frames.
