Finch and Sunnafrank Help Cards Sweep Rams

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals did exactly what they set out to do Friday afternoon.

In the doubleheader against the Shepherd Rams, the Cardinals prevailed in both contests, 4-0 and 5-4, earning their first sweep of the season.

WJU received a gem from Michael Finch to begin the series. Finch threw a complete game without allowing a run to score, giving the Cards the game-one victory over MEC powerhouse Shepherd.

In game two, the Cardinals led 4-0 after two frames and Dillon Sunnafrank shut the door, tossing three innings and getting the save. Sunnafrank also finished two 2-5 at the plate with a double, triple and one RBI to his credit.

Game 1 notes:
Winning pitcher – Michael Finch (2-2)
Losing pitcher – Joe Rindone (4-3)

Recap:
WJU hung three runs on Shepherd starter Joe Rindone in the home half of the second inning.

Christopher Minder began the rally with a single to short, followed by Adam Dennison being hit by a pitch. Christopher Brake doubled to left center to score Minder and send Dennison to third. Jagger Bruck grounded out on the next pitch to advance both runners. A few pitches later, Brake scored on a wild pitch.

Minder led off the sixth inning and again began a rally. Dennison advanced Minder via a sacrifice bunt, and Minder advanced to third on a balk. Brake then flew out to right and brought home Minder to put WJU ahead, 4-0.

Minder finished game one 3-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Dalton Davis and Dillon Sunnafrank each finished with a base hit while Brake finished with a pair of RBI's.

Finch fanned four Rams and walked just one while allowing five hits and zero runs to score.

Game 2 notes:
Winning pitcher – Cody Hudson (1-3)
Losing pitcher – AJ Stead (2-5)
Save – Dillon Sunnafrank (1)

Recap:
Wheeling Jesuit jumped on the Rams early, looking to complete their first sweep. The Cardinals scored two runs in the first and second innings to lead, 4-0.

Dalton Davis led off the game being hit by a pitch, and Drake May reached on an error. With two runners on and no outs, Dillon Sunnafrank blasted a double to right field to tack on the first run of game two.

Christopher Minder drew a walk to load the bases and Logan Schickler later drew a bases loaded walk to bring home May, the second run of the inning.

Jagger Bruck reached on an error to begin the second inning. Bruck stole second, and was later singled home by Drake May. May advanced two bases on a wild pitch and Matthew Angelini singled to right to score May and put WJU four runs clear of the Rams.

Shepherd answered with two runs in the fourth inning, but did not score again until the seventh inning.

Sunnafrank and the Cardinals would have an answer, however, scoring a run of their own in the home half of the seventh. Sunnafrank led off with a triple to right center, and was later singled home by Christopher Minder

Shepherd would score once more, a solo home run in the top of the ninth, but Sunnafrank shut the door and the Cardinals were victorious, 5-4.

Sunnafrank guided the WJU offense with his 2-5 effort. Davis, May, Angelini, Minder and Schickler each finished with one base hit.

Benjamin Standiford started and tossed 4.1 innings while striking out five hitters. Standiford allowed two runs to score on five hits. Cody Hudson relieved Standiford and earned the victory. Hudson threw 1.2 innings while allowing just one run to score. Sunnafrank threw the final three frames for the save.
