Women’s Lacrosse – Game Preview – Cards & Cavs Meet Saturday in Wise

WHEELING, W.Va. – Two of the top women's lacrosse teams within the Mountain East Conference face off this weekend in Wise, Virginia.
 
Wheeling Jesuit travels to the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers for a 12 p.m. contest on Saturday, April 15.
 
Sunday game notes:
The two clubs have met twice since joining the MEC. WJU has won both meetings and outscored the Cavaliers, 31-16, in the two matches.
 
Wheeling Jesuit enters the weekend winners of its last contest, a 17-7 home victory over West Virginia Wesleyan. The Cardinals are now 7-0 in regular season league play dating back to last season. Kori Hickman fired a career-high five goals in the victory while Elizabeth Hales finished with eight points.
 
UVa-Wise has won its last two outings, including an 11-10 victory over Charleston last Friday. Wise started the season 5-1 and is now 3-2 over their last five contests.
 
2016 meeting:
The Cardinals and Cavaliers met on April 15 of 2016 in Wheeling, West Virginia, where WJU was victorious, 17-10. The Cardinals led 9-7 at the break but outscored the Cavs 8-3 in the second half to pull away.
 
WJU graduate Jessie Tufnell led the way for the Cardinals with a 10-point outing. Hickman finished with two goals and five assists for seven points while Elizabeth Hales added four points. Paige Plesich and Markie Wright finished with three points each.
 
Holly Deckert caused a team-best three turnovers and scooped up three ground balls. Olivia Krock won four draw controls, picked up five ground balls, and forced two turnovers. Brianna Wahle added a pair of caused turnovers and three ground balls to the WJU stat line.    
 
WJU Stat leaders:
Hales continues to lead WJU in points, goals, and assists. Hales has 27 goals, 17 assists and 44 points to her credit. Hickman's five-goal outing propelled her into second place in points (22) and third in goals (9). Mary Burns has contributed a balanced attack of 11 goals and seven assists for her 18 season points. Burns has also won a team-high 25 draw controls and scooped up 11 ground balls to date.
 
Lyndsay Carpenter ranks first in caused turnovers (26) and ground balls (33) and has scored seven goals this season. Carpenter has also dished out three helpers to complete her 10-point total. Deckert has 17 caused turnovers and has 26 ground balls to her name while Taylor Quigg has caused 11 turnovers and picked up 14 loose balls. Wahle adds 10 ground balls and seven caused turnovers to the mix.
 
UVa-Wise Stat leaders:
Sydney Steinberg guides UVa-Wise with 37 points, as she has scored 11 goals and dished out 26 assists. Hannah Marshall has scored 22 times and handed out nine assists. Kristin Gobbi is the Cavs' leading goal scorer with 25 on the season.
 
Marshall ranks first in caused turnovers (18) and second in ground balls (31) and draw controls (24). Jessia Apgar has forced 11 turnovers and picked up a team-best 33 ground balls.
