Cardinals Sweep Rams, Take Over MEC North Lead

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – After not winning a single game of back-to-back doubleheaders a year ago, the Cardinals posted a pair of road softball wins over the Rams Saturday afternoon. Wheeling Jesuit's Mallory Chapman held the Shepherd lineup in check and the visitors plated some timely runs for a 3-1 and 2-0 sweep.

With the pair of victories, WJU (13-11) moves into the top Mountain East Conference North Division top spot at 7-5. Shepherd (15-10) falls to second at 5-5.

"We showed up to play some ball today," stressed WJU head coach Sara Pelegreen. "Two very good wins against a very good team. Mallory was stellar for us once again, and defense/offense had her back. It was a beautiful day, but we still need to nail down the little things. Our goal everyday is to keep learning and improving ourselves, and today was a step in the right direction."

The Cardinals moved in the right direction in their last two outings with four-straight MEC North wins, including a pair over the rival Hilltoppers of West Liberty Wednesday night.

A big part of the new win streak starts in the WJU circle and pitcher Mallory Chapman (9-6). The junior logged all 14 innings where she allowed one earned runs, 10 hits with nine strikeouts to a single walk. Chapman also helped her cause with three singles and a bases loaded walk.

Molly Welsh paced the 19-hit WJU hit parade with a 4 for 7 day. Rachel Conrad added three singles with an RBI.

Cassie Holstein, Jackie Cramer and Morgan Stohlman contributed a pair of singles each.

WJU completes its weekend road swing with two Sundays, April 2, games at Fairmont State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Game 1
In the top of the third, Holstein, Welsh and Cramer loaded the bases after each having singles. Chapman drove the ball up the middle for the run-scoring hit and a 1-0 lead. Following an out, Conrad singled to left for a 2-0 WJU advantage.

In the home half of the frame, Shepherd's Kaitlyn Konopka doubled home a run with two outs for a 2-1 game.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Chapman showed her patience with a RBI walk and 3-1 score. The WJU pitcher used her own support and retired the final six Shepherd hitters for the win.

Game 2
The Cardinals took advantage of a Rams error off Victoria Scott's bat and saw Welsh race home for a 1-0 lead in the third frame.

In the fourth inning, WJU loaded the bases with no outs when Taylor DiPerna sliced a single to left center and a 2-0 tally.

Shepherd did have its first two top of the seventh hitters single, but Chapman continued her brilliance with a fly out, strikeout and ground out to end the day. For the seven innings, the third-year player did not allow a base runner past second base.
