Cards Drop Pair of One Run Games to Yellow Jackets

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team traveled to West Virginia State Saturday due to weather and field conditions in Wheeling. 


The hosting Yellow Jackets prevailed in a pair of one run games over the Cardinals, 4-3 and 2 -1. 
 
Game 1 notes: 
Winning pitcher – Hunter Bradley 
Losing pitcher – Michael Finch
Save – Matthew Washington  
 
Recap: 
In the top half of the first inning, Christopher Minder singled home Drake May and Dillon Sunnafrank to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. 


In the next frame, RJ Harris singled to centerfield and Zach Blumling scored, putting the visiting Cardinals ahead by three, 3-0. 
 
West Virginia State battled back, though, scoring one run in the third and three runs in the fifth to take game one, 4-3. 
 
Harris finished with two base hits while six other Cardinals notched a hit in game one. Michael Finch tossed six innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out four Yellow Jackets.

Recap: 
In the second game and nine inning contest, WJU and West Virginia State were scoreless for five frames.
 
In the home half of the sixth, two Yellow Jackets crossed the plate to take a 2-0 advantage. 
 
In the top half of the seventh, Matthew Angelini hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Dillon Sunnafrank, WJU's lone run of the game.
 
Both clubs went scoreless in their last two at bats, and West Virginia State clinched the series sweep. 
 
May, Angelini, and Christopher Brake each finished with base hits in game two for WJU. 


Benjamin Standiford tossed five scoreless frames for WJU. He struck out five and walked just two hitters. Tanner Evans threw the final three frames and was tagged with the loss. Evans gave up two hits and allowed two runs to score.
