Cards Use 9-0 Stretch to Fight Past Scots

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals returned to their winning ways Tuesday evening. WJU rattled off a 9-0 stretch midway through the match to help outlast the Edinboro Fighting Scots, 13-11.
 
The Cardinals (2-3) fell behind, 2-0, nearly 13 minutes into play before Elizabeth Hales fired her eighth and ninth scores of the season, tying the match at two apiece.
 
Kori Hickman scored with 10:29 remaining and Hales added her third strike of the game two minutes later, pushing WJU ahead, 4-2.
 
Hickman and Hales assisted on the next two scores – a goal by Paige Plesich with 4:43 on the clock and a goal by Taylor Booth with 1:41 remaining.
 
Hales capped the first-half scoring with her fourth of the afternoon, this time scoring with 1:18 on the clock to send WJU into the locker room ahead by five, 7-2.
 
The Cardinals continued their 9-0 run with the first two scores of the second half. Markie Wright scored her first goal of the evening four minutes into the half as Hickman found Wright crossing in front, and Wright would do the rest. Plesich added another goal less than 30 seconds later, helping WJU to its largest lead of the night, 9-2.
 
Edinboro would score twice, pulling to within five goals, 9-4.
 
Hales struck for her fifth score of the game with 21:42 on the clock, stretching WJU's lead back to five. Edinboro and WJU traded a pair of goals to make the score 11-6 with 16:15 remaining.
 
Mary Burns scored for the first time on the evening with 13:20 on the clock, doubling WJU over Edinboro, 12-6. Plesich added another score a minute later, increasing the host's margin to seven.
 
Over the final 10 and a half minutes of play, Edinboro would score five times, but the Cardinals would outlast the Fighting Scots, 13-11.
 
Hales and Hickman each finished with six points. Plesich scored three times and assisted on another goal for her four points. Wright added one goal and an assist for two points while Coggins, Burns and Booth each scored one time.
 
On the defensive side of the field, Lyndsay Carpenter led WJU with six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Taylor Quigg forced four turnovers and grabbed three ground balls while Holly Deckert caused a team-high five turnovers while picking up three ground balls. Ally Coggins, Olivia Krock, and Brianna Wahle each finished with two ground balls. Burns and Hales each caused one turnover in the game.
 
Maire Austin stopped five shots on her way to recording her second victory of the season.
 
WJU returns to action on Tuesday, March 14 to host Ohio Valley at 6 p.m.
