Chapman Dominates Hilltoppers, Leads Cardinals to Softball Sweep

WTRF Highlights
WHEELING, W.Va. –
Mallory Chapman shinned in dominating fashion on Wednesday's softball diamond. Chapman used some early Wheeling Jesuit opening run support in a her one-hitter, before belting a solo homer in the late game in a sweep of West Liberty.

The Cardinals (11-11/5-5 Mountain East Conference North Division) received a bottom-of-the first inning Dana Achille three-run home run and added two more in the second and Chapman cruised. The junior pitcher allowed only a top of the fourth inning bloop West Liberty (7-13/3-7 MEC North) single for a one-hitter.

A Skylar Minzler single to center plated Damia Mogielski, who led off the second with a double in game two, for a Hilltoppers, 1-0, lead on Chapman and the Cardinals. Chapman fanned the final two second-inning hitters, retired the final 15 West Liberty hitters and blasted the game-tying home sixth solo home run. WJU added a second unearned run and Chapman shut the door.

"After losing a few games last weekend, we talked a lot this week about giving your whole entire heart for 14 whole innings every time we play games. X's and O's are great, but it's the heart and the soul that wins ball games. And I'm just really blessed to have witnessed our team do what they did tonight. They had it all and I'm very proud of them," explained WJU head coach Sara Pelegreen.

Chapman (7-6) logged all 14 innings in the WJU circle where she allowed only one earned run and four hits, while she stuck out 14 without a walk. In fact, the third-year Cardinal fanned a season-high 10 in game two.

At the plate, Chapman walked twice, including a bases-loaded second free pass and scored a run in game one, before her towering solo homer in game two.

Molly Welsh and Jackie Cramer accounted for four of the home team's other 11 hits. Welsh had all singles, while Cramer doubled and drove home the the game two winning run on a ground out.

Achille belted the home first three-run homer in the opener and doubled and scored the game-winning run in the late contest.

Mogielski recorded the lone extra base hit, a double, for West Liberty of its four hits.

WJU has two days off before traveling for a Saturday, Apr. 1, doubleheader at MEC North-leading Shepherd at 1 p.m.

Game 1

After the Hilltopers went down in order to start the game, Chapman and Victoria Scott drew two-out walks. Achille stepped in for her second home run of the year for a 3-0 WJU lead.

In the home second with one out, Cassie Holstein and Welsh reached on infield hits. Kelsi Thompson loaded the bases on an error, before Chapman drew the bases loaded walk. Scott reached on a second Hilltopper error and Welsh touched home for the second run.

Following the first 11 batters retired, a WJU error and Charley Troggio's bloop single came back-to-back. Chapman regained control the rest of the way with the next 10 West Liberty hitters getting out for the one-hitter.

Game 2

Minzler singled home Mogielski in the top of the second for a West Liberty, 1-0 lead. Chapman fanned the next two batters to end the threat.

In the bottom of the sixth, Chapman blasted her long home run to right center. After one ground out, Achille lined a ball ruled fair over the third-base bag for a double. Pinch hitter Rachel Conrad reached on an error, before Cramer ground out to second and Achille scored.

Chapman finished the top of the seventh with her 10th strikeout victim and 15th-Hilltopper hitter retired in a row.
