Defending Regional Champ Golden Eagles Blank Cardinals

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – It was a tough day on the softball diamond against the defending Atlantic Regional Champions. The University of Charleston softball team blanked Wheeling Jesuit in both ends of a Friday twinbill, 3-0 and 7-0.

In the opener, the Cardinals (9-9/3-3 Mountain East Conference North) were unable to take advantage of base runners in four innings. The Golden Eagles (15-8/5-1 MEC South) took a 1-0 home-first lead and added a pair of fourth-frame unearned runs for the 3-0 margin.

After two scoreless innings, Cassie Holstein lined a two-out single up the middle. Molly Welsh followed with her hit and Kelsi Thompson walked, but the visitors failed to score. The Golden Eagles did not have that problem as Hayleigh Christopher belted a two-run homer and Laura Ashlock made it back-to-back home runs with a solo shot in a four-run bottom of the third. WJU was unable to get another runner into scoring position in its final four trips to the plate.

On the day, Victoria Scott doubled and singled twice, while Hostein lined a pair of hits and a stolen base.

Kelly Albers, Thompson, Welsh, Taylor DiPerna and Dana Achille all had one hit.

Mallory Chapman suffered the game one defeat, but she logged a strong six innings with eight hits, one earned run and five strikeouts.

WJU continues its weekend road swing in the Capital area with a Saturday, March 24, 2 p.m. doubleheader at West Virginia State.
