Second Half Surge Sends Storm Past Cardinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – A strong second half helped propel the visiting Lake Erie College Storm past Wheeling Jesuit Thursday evening. The Cardinals (2-6) trailed by two at the break before Lake Erie (4-0) outscored WJU 9-1 in the second half to win the match, 16-6.

Despite Lake Erie College taking a 1-0 lead 35 seconds in the match, the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals would lead for a chunk of the first half.

WJU answered the Storm's first goal with three straight scores of their own, as Elizabeth Hales scored twice and Lyndsay Carpenter found the back of the net once.

Lake Erie answered and cut the Cardinals lead to one, 3-2, but freshman Hayley Holmquist sent WJU back ahead by two, 4-2, with 12:01 in the first half.

The Storm once again had a response, scoring the next five goals to take a 7-4 advantage. Senior Mary Burns gave WJU a source of energy just before the break, scoring with 12 seconds on the clock and pulling WJU to within two goals, 7-5.

Lake Erie would erupt for nine goals in the second half while holding the Cardinals to a lone goal, Burns' second of the evening. The Storm went on to defeat the Cardinals, 16-6.

Hales finished with three points, scoring two goals and handing out one assist. Burns scored twice, won three draw controls, and scooped up two ground balls. Carpenter assisted on two scores and charted a goal of her own for three points. The junior defender, who started at midfield for WJU, also picked up three ground balls, caused a turnover, and won two draw controls. Olivia Krock finished with two assists while Holmquist scored her one goal.

Brianna Wahle and Ally Coggins each scooped up two ground balls. Taylor Quigg and Paige Plesich both finished with a ground ball and a draw control. Kate Calder won one draw control.
