Rogers 3-RBI Game Leads WJU Opening Win, IUP Takes Game Two

WHEELING, W.Va. – Starting three-straight doubleheader days, the Cardinals split their first pair of softball games. Courtney Rogers three-RBI effort helped Wheeling Jesuit to a 6-1 opening win, before Indiana (Pa.) plated three unearned runs for a 6-3 late victory.

In the home first inning, WJU (9-7) wasted no time in getting the home lead. Rogers and Victoria Scott lined back-to-back run-scoring singles and Morgan Stohlman drew a bases-loaded walk for a 3-0 lead. Rogers added a two-run, fifth-frame double, while Mallory Chapman was strong in the circle of game one.

Tied at 1-1 in the top of the third, IUP (8-7) pushed ahead with three unearned runs. WJU battled back with a four-inning pair, but managed only four hits in its last three trips to the plate and fell short.

"I thought we played two very good games against a good IUP team," said WJU head coach Sara Pelegreen. "In game one, we were a powerhouse in all aspects. Then, in game two, we did well, but they hit better than we did. Sometimes you have to tip your cap to the other team. We played good ball today, and I'm looking forward to four more tough games this weekend."

Rogers doubled and singled with four total RBI in the two contests.

Along with the game one win where she allowed only one run on five hits with four strikeouts, Chapman doubled and singled with two runs scored.

Welsh produced four singles with two runs and a stolen base as the top WJU hit total. Scott added a double and two singles with an RBI and Kelsi Thompson contributed her own double and pair of singles.

With the impending Sunday forecast, the Cardinals now play at the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. WJU stays in the Capital City area for the originally scheduled 1 p.m. Saturday twinbill at West Virginia State.
