Scott Base-Clearing Hit Helps Cardinals Split Against Blue Knights

WHEELING, W.Va. – In an afternoon where Cardinals runs were scarce, Victoria Scott helped solve the issue late in the second game. Scott lined a bases-clearing single and gave Wheeling Jesuit its first lead of the day on the way to a 4-3 game two win after Urbana recorded a 4-0 opening victory.

The Blue Knights (5-7/2-2 Mountain East Conference North) pushed home four runs in the top of the fifth, including a Mykee Holtz three-run triple and became the first team to shut out the Cardinals (8-6/3-1 MEC North) this season in game one.

Trailing 2-0, Scott drove the ball to left field for a single and an ensuing Urbana fielding error cleared the bases for WJU's first lead, 3-2. Courtney Rogers singled to deep center field and plated Scott to complete a four-run at bat, 4-2. Urbana scored once in the sixth, but Mallory Chapman (4-3) shut the door from there for her fourth win.

Chapman picked up both WJU pitching decisions. On the day, the junior covered 10.1 innings where she struck out seven and allowed five earned runs. At the plate, Chapman went 4 for 5, all singles.

Morgan Stohlman added a single and double and Rogers and Molly Welsh had a pair of singles each. Scott and Kelsi Thompson lined a hit apiece.

WJU remains at home where it hosts Indiana (Pa.) on Thursday, March 23, in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.

Game 1

In a scoreless game after four frames, the Blue Knights scored four times in the fifth on two hits. With two outs and a runner on second, Urbana drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Bailee Faulkner was hit by a pitch for a RBI, before Holtz tripled home the other three runners.

WJU left seven runners on base, including one in the fifth and a pair in the sixth, but failed to score.

Game 2

Urbana put a pair of scores on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, 2-0. WJU was held to three hits over the first four innings until the fifth.

With one out, Stohlman doubled passed the third-base bag. Taylor DiPerna followed with a walk. After two outs, Welsh reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases after Urbana dropped the throw at second base. Scott took advantage with the bases-clearing single and 3-2 lead, before she ran home on Rogers long single.
