Bobcats Take Monday Pair from Cardinals

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats swept the Wheeling Jesuit baseball team by scores of 3-1 and 5-4 Monday afternoon.

In game one, the Cardinals led 1-0 after two and a half innings of play before the Bobcats scored the games' final three runs to win the outing.

In the second contest of the afternoon, Wheeling Jesuit tied the game at three apiece in the fifth inning, but West Virginia Wesleyan hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to sweep the Cardinals.

Game 1 recap:
Cody Hudson put the Cardinals on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Christopher Brake singled to center field to begin the top half of the third. Brake later stole second and advanced to third on a Drake May groundout. Hudson stepped to the plate and did what he was expected to do, flying out to deep right field to score Brake.

Wesleyan would answer, though, with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the third frame. The Bobcats added an insurance run in the fourth and would defeat the Cardinals, 3-1.

May, Hudson, Brake and Christopher Minder finished with base hits for the Cardinals.

Josh Bell tossed six innings and allowed just one earned run to cross home plate. Bell struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Game 2 recap:
Wesleyan struck first, scoring three runs in the third inning off WJU starter Kyle Rees. A pair of doubles followed by a single helped the Bobcats to their early lead.

WJU had an answer in the fifth inning, however, as Carter Sancomb began the inning with a base hit to right field. Jagger Bruck singled and advanced Sancomb to second before May moved both runners ahead one base on a sacrifice bunt.

In the next at bat, Cody Hudson singled to score Sancomb. Matthew Angelini reached on a fielder's choice and Bruck crossed home on the play. RJ Harris singled to left to score Hudson, the tying run.

WV Wesleyan scored a single run in the seventh inning before the Cardinals tied the game at four apiece in their last at bat. The Bobcats would clinch the series sweep by way of a John Koon walk-off home run in the bottom half of the ninth frame.

Harris finished game two three for five at the plate with a pair of RBI's. Bruck added two base hits while six other Cardinals recorded a hit.

Rees tossed six innings and allowed four runs. Tanner Evans was tagged with the loss, throwing 2.2 innings and giving up one earned run.
