WJU Splits Doubleheader with Northwood

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Wheeling Jesuit split its Thursday afternoon doubleheader with Northwood University by scores of 5-14 and 10-4.
 
Game 1:
In the first of the two games,  WJU (1-7) pounded out eight hits and scored five runs, but Northwood (4-3) scored 14 runs including seven in the second inning, earning the victory.
 
Brock Wenger took the loss for WJU, throwing 1.1 innings and allowing seven runs. Kyle Rees threw 3.2 innings while Christopher Minder tossed two innings.
 
Michael Finch and Logan Schickler finished with a pair of base hits and two runs apiece. Drake May, Matthew Angelini, Dalton Davis, and Christopher Minder each charted one hit in the first game.
 
Game 2:
 
The Cardinals took their first lead of the contest, 2-1, in the sixth inning when Angelini doubled home Finch and May. Northwood responded, tying the game at two all in the bottom half of the sixth.
 
The Cardinals erupted for one run in the seventh, five runs in the eighth, and two in the ninth on their way to a 10-4 victory.
 
May doubled to score Tristan Grimes in the seventh inning before five WJU runners crossed home in the eighth.
 
Cody Hudson, Schickler and Davis all advanced a base on a passed ball, while Davis scored on the play. Jagger Bruck later singled to right, scoring Hudson. May tripled to right, scoring Bruck and Adam Dennison, and later scored on a passed ball, putting WJU ahead 8-2.
 
In the ninth inning, Dennison singled to center, scoring Davis and TJ Jacob.
 
May finished game two 3-5 with two runs and three RBI's. Finch finished 3-4 with a run scored. Davis finished 2-5 with two runs scored while Bruck contributed a 2-5 day at the plate.
 
Josh Bell earned the first victory of the season for the Cardinals, lasting seven innings and allowing just one earned run. Bell struck out five hitters and walked just one. Nick Luciano threw the final two innings without allowing an earned run.
