Cards Drop Pair of Close Games to Pioneers

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Michael Finch and Benjamin Standiford gave Wheeling Jesuit all they could Sunday afternoon.

In the Cardinals first game against the Glenville State Pioneers, Finch threw seven innings while allowing just three hits and two runs. The Pioneers, however, scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to knock off WJU, 5-4.

Standiford took the hill in game two for the Cardinals, lasting five innings without allowing an earned run. Glenville plated two unearned runs, one in the first and second innings, to win game two and sweep WJU, 2-0.

WJU returns to action Monday, March 20 to face West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon, West Virginia. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Game 1 recap:
The home-standing Pioneers scored a run in the first inning before WJU answered with a run in the top of the fourth and fifth innings.

Dalton Davis began the fourth with a walk and Logan Schickler advanced Davis to second on a sacrifice. Adam Dennison singled two batters later to advance Davis to third. Christopher Minder would single in the next at-bat, scoring Davis.

Drake May began the fifth with a walk and Davis doubled him in, tying the contest at two apiece.

Neither club scored for the next four frames until WJU struck for two runs in the top half of the 10th inning.

Minder began the rally with a single, but was later caught stealing. Jagger Bruck was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a Matthew Angelini double. TJ Jacob pinch ran for Angelini.

May walked to load the bases before Harris singled to score Jacob and Bruck, putting WJU ahead, 4-2.

The Pioneers would not go away, scoring three runs of their own in the bottom half and stealing game one, 5-4.

Cody Hudson was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs to cross the plate in the 10th

Game 2 recap:
