Cardinals Storm Back, but No. 4 Lions Take Match

WHEELING, W.Va. – The home Cardinals stormed out of halftime and battled back into Thursday afternoon's men's lacrosse match. No. 4-ranked Lindenwood held off Wheeling Jesuit with a final three goals and took the match, 12-7.

Trailing 8-1, WJU's Joe Wright flicked in a goal from three feet away with 1:21 in the second quarter from Jordan Getz. The Cardinals (1-6) continued their surge in the third quarter with four-straight goals over the first 12 minutes, including a pair from Travis Getz for an 8-6 score. After a Lions (5-1) answer, Jordan Getz pulled the Cardinals back to within two, 9-7, with 11:44 left in the match.

"It's unfortunate to come away with a loss today, but I'm proud of our guys for fighting until the very end. This, again, is proof that we can play with anybody in the country," said WJU head coach Landon DelPrince. "If we can just string four full quarters together, we're bound to turn some heads. The reality is that we're a one-win team, but we've had probably one of the most, if not the most, challenging schedules this program has ever seen. To have played as many ranked teams as we have this early in the season is tough. We just need to keep fighting and know that we're getting better through this process."

The Getz brothers, Jordan and Travis, both totaled two goals and an assist to lead WJU's offense.

Peter Slattery and Wright added a goal and an assist. Michael Schonhiutt had the final WJU score, while Matt Lee assisted on one goal.

Kellen McMahan logged the second half in goal where he saved seven shots. Jake Lilly had three saves in the first half.

David Corazalla paced the Lions with four goals and two assists.

WJU has two days off, before it plays at the University of Indianapolis Sunday afternoon, March 19, in a 2 p.m. match.
