Lakers Second-Half Scoring, Pushes Past Cardinals

ERIE, Pa. – The Cardinals late game proved to be a tough one again Sunday afternoon. Mercyhurst scored the final seven goals over the men's lacrosse match's last 24 minutes and pushed past Wheeling Jesuit, 11-6.
 
The Cardinals (1-5) opened an early 4-1 lead with a pair of Michael Stillings goals. WJU continued to lead by a pair, 5-3, at half following a Dereck Downs goal.
 
The Lakers (4-1) answered the Cardinals' McLean Fitzmartin third-period goal with the last seven scores of the match over the final 23:44.
 
In WJU's lowest output of the season, Stillings led the offense with two goals on his only two shot attempts.
 
Matt Lee and Fitzmartin added a goal and an assist apiece. Downs and Michael Tighe accounted for the other WJU goals, while Travis Getz had one assist.
 
Goalie Jake Lilly saved 12 Lakers shots.
 
Mercyhurst's Derek Richards led all scorers with four goals.
 
The Lakers outshot the Cardinals, 47-17 with a 27-4 second-half margin.
 
WJU returns home to Bishop Schmitt Field for a 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon, March 16, match against Lindenwood University.
