Cardinals Dominate Cavs, Maintain First Place in MEC

WISE, Va. - The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals traveled to Virginia Wise looking to make a statement, and the Cardinals did just that.

WJU stormed to a 26-4 first quarter advantage, and would not stop there. At the half, WJU had maintained its 22-point margin, 38-16. With only 10 minutes to play in the contest, the Cardinals led 55-28. WJU held off the Cavaliers surge down the stretch, securing the clubs fourth straight victory, 72-44 over Virginia Wise.

"We came out of the gate hard and played an unbelievable first quarter," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "We played intense scout defense and followed the game plan while playing with a great level of poise. We outrebounded Wise by five which was a huge goal of ours, and we managed to shoot 21 of 24 from the free throw line. All of this played a huge role in helping us improve to 19-4 and remain atop the MEC."

The MEC's top ranked defense was just that Thursday evening, holding Virginia Wise to 44 points while not allowing a player to finish in double figures.

With the victory, WJU maintains sole possession of first place in the MEC while snapping the Cavaliers 10-game home win streak.

Monica Burns led all scorers with 20 points, including the first eight points of the contest for the Cardinals. Burns buried a pair of treys followed by a jumper, putting the visitors ahead, 8-3.

Taylor Sandidge of Virginia Wise added a free-throw with 4:25 remaining in the first before WJU would rattle off the final 14 points of the opening period, stretching its lead to 22 points, 26-4.

Burns and Mariah Callen each added a pair of free throws late in the second before Cassi Stein added a lone shot from the charity stripe, sending WJU into the half ahead 38-16.

Jaana Motton netted a layup with just over two minutes remaining in the third period before Burns converted another pair from the line, growing the Cardinal lead to 30 points, 53-23. The largest lead of the contest, 32 points, came three minutes into the fourth period when a Callen trey was followed by a Motton layup.

Freshman Taliah Cashwell sent in a pair of free throws late in the fourth, scoring the game's final points and solidifying WJU's 72-44 victory.

Burns reached the 20-point mark for the 11th time this season while Chenelle Moore added 12 points on 4-7 shooting. Callen added 10 points, four rebounds and three assists while Motton finished with a game best 11 rebounds to go along with her eight points.

Kylie Frizell chipped in seven points and six rebounds. Lydia Hyburg scored six points and grabbed five rebounds. Chelsea Richardson secured eight rebounds and scored four points. Cassi Stein added three points and three rebounds to the mix.

The Cardinals continue their road stint and travel to Concord University for a 1 p.m. tipoff this Saturday, February 11.
