Cards Push Past Concord for 20th Win

ATHENS, W.Va. – Saturday's contest between the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals and the Concord Mountain Lions would be decided over the final 20 minutes of action.

After the two teams played the opening 20 minutes to a tied score of 28 all, WJU would run away in the second half, securing the teams 20th win of the season. The Cardinals won the third and fourth quarters by a combined score of 39-20, clinching the clubs fifth consecutive victory.

"At the half, we thought Concord was playing harder than us, but we were able to refocus for the second half", said WJU head Coach Debbie Buff. "We played much more inspired in the second half, and offensively our cuts were much harder. Our entire team played a part in getting our 20th win. I think that as a team, we are truly buying into being road warriors."

Concord shot its way to an early 9-5 advantage but the Cardinals would respond, tying the game at nine apiece. With 2:34 in the first, Mariah Callen made one of her game high five treys, putting the visitors ahead, 12-9.

At the end of the opening period, Concord held a 16-14 upper hand.

The Cardinals scored the first seven points of the second quarter, taking a 21-14 advantage. Callen contributed the seven points alone, including a four-point play.

Junior Cassi Stein stretched WJU's lead to six, 25-19, with 3:52 in the second quarter, but the Mountain Lions would finish the half strong, sending the contest into the break tied at 28 all.

WJU began the third quarter on a 12-2 run, growing its lead to 10, 40-30. Senior Kylie Frizell knocked in a jumper with 2:59 on the clock, stretching the Cardinal lead to 14 points, 46-32. WJU took a 46-35 lead into the final period.

Monica Burns opened the final frame with a three pointer, putting WJU back ahead by 14, 49-35. Seniors Chelsea Richardson and Jaana Motton followed Burns' trey with layups of their own, and the WJU lead grew to 18, 53-35. With 1:56 remaining on the clock, Richardson scored another bucket, pushing WJU ahead, 65-46. Aliyah Sadler made one of two from the free-throw line with under a minute to play, growing the visitors lead to 21 points. The Cardinals went on to win the contest, 67-48.

Callen led all scorers with 16 points on 5-6 shooting from three. Motton finished with her 11th double-double, 12 points and 13 rebounds. Burns added nine points and a pair of assists while Frizell scored seven points. Richardson and Chenelle Moore each scored six points, and Taliah Cashwell added five.
