Cardinals Drop Road Trip to Pioneers

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – In Thursday's battle for possession of first place in the Mountain East Conference, the hosting Pioneers of Glenville State would outlast the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals, 88-75.

Glenville State (21-4, 15-4) outscored Wheeling Jesuit (20-5, 15-4 MEC) 28-19 in the third quarter before winning the fourth quarter, 24-19, clinching a share of first place in the MEC.

"Glenville State is so athletic and had 16 offensive boards, which deflated our defense," WJU head coach Debbie Buff stated. "We also missed 14 lay-ups which we need to make against any team to win. It counts as one game and we need to lock in on Saturday. Hats off to Glenville for playing a great game."

Monica Burns, a sophomore from New Stanton, Pennsylvania, tied the MEC record for free-throw percentage (100%) in a single game, finishing 14-14 from the line. Burns now sits atop the tied record with her 14 attempts, as Brianna Vaden of Shepherd previously held the mark with a 12-12 game in 2014.

The Cardinals won the first quarter by seven points, 22-15, and led by as many as 11 points with 3:14 remaining in the second quarter. The contest became tied at 22 all with 8:32 in the second before the Cardinals would claim the next 11 points, pulling ahead 33-22.

Glenville State answered with a run of its own, finishing the quarter on a 14-4 run, climbing to within a point at the half.

The Pioneers maintained the lead for the majority of the third quarter, but WJU would not go down without a fight.

With 8:57 in the fourth, Chenelle Moore scored a bucket to help the Cardinals to within four points of the Pioneers. Glenville State grew its lead back to double figures, 70-60, over the next two minutes, and would go on to outlast WJU, 88-75.

Burns charted the Cardinals first 30-point effort of the season, finishing with 31 points and six rebounds. Jaana Motton added 19 points and seven rebounds while Chenelle Moore scored 15 points on 6-9 shooting.

Kylie Frizell scored six points while Chelsea Richardson and Lydia Hyburg each added two.

WJU returns to the road for a Saturday contest at West Virginia Wesleyan. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
