Cardinals Build Early Lead, Cruise Past Bobcats

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -  Saturday afternoon marked the last road contest of the 2016-17 regular season for the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals. The WJU women headed to West Virginia Wesleyan, looking to sweep the season series.

WJU (21-5, 16-4 Mountain East Conference) built an early 25-9 first quarter advantage and would lead by 19, 42-23, at the half. The Cardinals would cruise past the Bobcats (6-17, 6-14 MEC) in the second half, going on to win by a score of 75-56.

"We came out of the gate fast and played excellent defense in the first half," stressed WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "We had four people in double figures and shared the ball well. We had 18 offensive rebounds, and it was a great team effort for win number 21."

The Bobcats netted the first bucket of the afternoon before WJU took 14 of the next 16 points, claiming a 14-4 lead. A pair of free throws by Mariah Callen followed by a last second Chenelle Moore jumper sent WJU ahead by 15 at the end of the first.

With 6:29 in the second, Callen buried a trey, sending the Cardinals ahead by 20, 33-13. Less than two minutes later, Callen added another long-distance bucket, propelling the Cardinals ahead by 23, 38-15. Wheeling Jesuit would enter the half 19 points clear of Wesleyan, 42-23.

At the 4:35 mark in the third, senior Kylie Frizell netted a three, putting WJU back ahead by 20, 55-35. Callen added a pair of free-throws on the next trip, stretching the guests lead to 22.

Monica Burns and Chelsea Richardson each chipped in two points on the next two possessions, maintaining WJU's 22-point upper hand. Wesleyan hit for the last three points of the period, cutting the Cardinals lead to 18 heading into the fourth.

Wesleyan would battle WJU throughout the fourth, cutting the visitors lead to just 13 with 3:12 remaining. The Cardinals, however, would fight off the Bobcats rush and clinch the 75-56 victory.

Jaana Motton led WJU with 19 points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists. Callen also added 19 points, six assists and four rebounds of her own. Moore finished with 15 points and four boards.

Richardson chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds while Burns scored seven points. Frizell finished with five points, four assists and three rebounds.

The Cardinals return home for their final two games of the 2016-17 regular season. WJU first hosts Notre Dame College on Thursday before welcoming the West Liberty Hilltoppers into the McDonough Center Saturday afternoon.
