Cardinals Final Attempt Falls off, Cavaliers Post Upset

WISE, Va. – In a similar game as the first meeting, the Cardinals battled back, but this time could not pull out the victory. The University of Virginia's College at Wise played just well enough in the final moments and posted the upset, 83-81, over Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball Thursday night.

After trailing by nine points with 7:14 left, the No. 18 Cardinals (18-5/12-5 Mountain East Conference) went on a needed 14-6 spurt off a Jarin Hilson trey for an 80-79 contest. A fast break Kyle Ritz layup made it a one-point game again, 82-81, at 1:48. Down 83-81 with seven seconds, a Hilson wrap around driving layup bounced off the rim and the Cavaliers (7-16/5-12 MEC) gathered in the loose ball to complete the upset.

"UVa.-Wise did a good job tonight," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We need to take pride in the defensive end, and it starts with our leaders. Our will to guard is not there (right now). It has to mean more to our guys."

Ritz knocked down six of his seven attempts for a team-high 16 points to go with seven rebounds.

Pat Moseh, Hilson and Haywood Highsmith contributed 14 points apiece. Moseh and Highsmith pulled down seven boards, while Hilson dished eight assists.

Preston Boswell and Dominique Tham added nine and eight points off the Cards bench.

In the first meeting on Jan. 16 in Wheeling, WJU rallied and forced overtime on a Hilson 3-pointer, before taking the game in the extra period, 88-81.

The Cavaliers trio of Dimitri Sousa, Michal Seals and Taiwo Badmus each hit for 20-plus points. Sousa led with 23 points and seven rebounds. Seals dumped in 21 points with five assists, while Badmus recorded a double-double of 20 points and 14 caroms.

After the Cardinals surged back to within a point with 1:48 left, the visiting team turned the ball over. The Cavs returned the favor on a Sousa offensive foul. WJU failed to take advantage of the opportunity for the second time in a row with a turnover. UVa-Wise's Tajh Eason made one of two free throws with nine seconds for an 83-81 score and set up the final WJU game-tying shot attempt.

In the first half, WJU led by as many as five points, 24-19, on a fast break dunk by Highsmith off a Jordan Fair pass. The Cavaliers came back and saw a 40-40 deadlock at intermission.

UVa.-Wise went out to an early six-point second-half lead, 48-42, only to see WJU bounce back for a 55-53 on a Tham offensive putback. The game went back-and-forth until UVa.-Wise ran off eight-straight points for a 74-65 advantage with 7:56 remaining.

The Cardinals stay on the road for a 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon game at the Mountain Lions of Concord.
