Cardinals Early Lead Gives Cushion, Takes Mt. Lions

ATHENS, W. Va. – In an important Mountain East Conference road game, the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team started fast for an early lead and rode the cushion over Concord Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals (19-5/13-5 MEC) scored 10 of the game's first 12 points and raced to a 21-8 advantage in the opening eight minutes. WJU never allowed host Concord (8-16/4-14 MEC) closer than seven points over the final 37-plus minutes of play.

Pat Moseh led the inspired charge with a season-high 23-point effort on 9 of 15 shooting, including four rebounds and six assists. Fellow junior Haywood Highsmith poured in 19 points of his own on 7 of 12 from the floor and swiped 16 rebounds and dished five assists.

"We did a nice job defending and rebounding. They (Concord) are hard to guard," noted WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "Pat did a nice job scoring the ball and setting up his teammates. Haywood was active on both ends as he rebounded the ball well and scored it well.

The Cardinals' scoring did not stop with Moseh and Highsmith. Senior Kyle Ritz dumped in 17 points and pulled in seven boards, while Preston Boswell accounted for 16 points, 11 in the second half, and had a pair of assists.

Off the bench, Jordan Fair provided a shot in the arm with seven first-half points, including a trey. Dominique Tham added six tallies and six rebounds, while Jarin Hilson scored seven late points.

"Kyle was very active and did a good job scoring the ball. Our bench was solid as Dom was active and rebounded well. Preston did a good job scoring the ball, while Jordan Fair was big in the first half and all today for us," continued Sancomb.

The Mountain Lions saw Tommy Bolte and Aaron Miller total 19 and 18 points in their effort.

Starting the game, WJU netted the opening seven points and a Ritz triple made it 10-2 in the first 2:27. The visitors did not rest there as they extended it to 21-8 over the next six minutes off a Boswell free throw.

Fair's 3-pointer gave the Cardinals their largest opening stanza lead of 35-20 with 6:03, before Moseh downed a trey in the final seconds to equal the 15-point margin, 46-31, at the intermission.

Concord defended its home court and battled back to within seven points twice, 59-52 and 70-63, with 7:04 on the game clock. WJU responded with a 9-3 spurt topped by a Boswell 3-point play to make it 83-66 at the 4:32 mark.

WJU finished with a decisive 44-30 rebound margin. The Cardinals connected on 17 of 25 second-half shots at a 68-percent clip.

WJU continues on the road in a Thursday night, Feb. 16, contest at Glenville State. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
