WJU Shuts Down Shepherd, Motton Reaches 1,000 Career Points

Motton's 1,000-point Highlight
WHEELING, W.Va. –
The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals outscored the Shepherd Rams 35-20 over the final 16 minutes of play, cruising to their 13th conference victory of the season. The Cardinals regain sole possession of first place in the Mountain East Conference with Glenville State falling at Virginia Wise on Saturday.

Roughly three minutes into the third quarter, senior forward Jaana Motton added two of her 13 points, joining the Cardinals 1,000 career point club.

"We asked our team at half time to commit to defense for the remaining 20, and we were outstanding," WJU head coach Debbie Buff stated. "We outrebounded Shepherd 47-27, and Jaana scored her 1,000th point while finishing with 15 rebounds. Mariah came up huge with 28 points and five assists."

The Cardinals (18-4, 13-3 MEC) flew to an early 5-0 lead out of the gate, as senior Kylie Frizell buried a trey and Chelsea Richardson made a mid-range jumper. WJU's lead grew to nine, 13-4, when Richardson added her second bucket with 5:32 remaining in the first period. Shepherd pulled to within three, 20-17, at the end of the first.

Shepherd climbed ahead, 28-27, with 4:04 in the second and would grow its halftime advantage to four points, 38-34.

WJU rattled off the first 12 points of the third period, pulling ahead 46-38. Junior guard Mariah Callen added eight of her season-high 28 points during the 12-0 Cardinal run.

Monica Burns converted a pair of free throws with just over two minutes remaining in the third, putting WJU ahead by 13 points. On WJU's last trip of the quarter, Callen added another basket, propelling the Cardinals ahead, 61-46.

The fourth quarter would be all WJU, as the Cardinals never led by less than 11 points. WJU's largest lead, 21 points, was the game's final score, 81-60.

Callen led the way with a season-high 28 points for the Cardinals. The Morgantown, West Virginia native buried five of eight attempts from three while knocking in seven of eight from the charity stripe.

Motton scored 13 points and grabbed a game high 15 rebounds to secure her 10th double-double of the season. Monica Burns and Chenelle Moore each scored 10 points while Kylie Frizell added nine. Chelsea Richardson scored four points and Taliah Cashwell and Lydia Hyburg each added a hoop.

WJU travels to Virginia Wise on Thursday, February 9 for a 5:30 tip.
