Cardinals Return to Win Column, Push Past Rams

WHEELING, W. Va. – After a couple tough games, the Cardinals returned to the win column Saturday afternoon. The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team pushed past Shepherd, 86-66.

The No. 16-ranked Cardinals (18-4/12-4 Mountain East Conference) used a strong opening and equally as solid ending, before they eased to the win over the Rams (13-9/10-6 MEC). WJU went out to a 17-5 early lead and finished the game a 14-4 run for the 20-point margin.

"It is good to get back in the win column with a team effort where we moved and shared the ball extremely well," pointed out WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We needed a win as we are a real good team who believes in who we are. When things don't go as we wanted we started to have doubts, but we stayed together and I think it made us a better team."

Haywood Highsmith was the WJU leader of the five double-digit producers with 18 points on 7 of 12 shooting. The junior also grabbed eight rebounds, handed out three assists and had a blocked shot.

Pat Moseh continued his consistent play with 17 points on 6 of 13 from the floor with six boards. He dished five assists to only a single turnover and swiped three balls.

Preston Boswell hit for 11 of his 15 points in the first half, including three treys. Kyle Ritz added 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Chase Lawson dropped a dozen. Tham chipped in five points and six caroms.

"I love to see Pat Moseh have five assists and only one turnover and I thought Haywood had a complete game. He was efficient from the field, rebounded, moved the ball and had good assists," noted Sancomb. "Chase and Preston gave us great minutes from the two spot, Kyle was workmanlike and Dominique (Tham) was great off the bench."

Shepherd received 17 points from Naim Muhammad in its effort.

The Cardinals raced out to a 10-2 lead in the opening 2:44 and held a 13-point, 30-16, advantage on a Boswell 3-pointer at 10:16 in the opening stanza. After a Tham free throw made it 33-18, the Rams scored the next seven tallies and later pulled to within two points, 35-33, at 3:31 in the first half. It would be the closest Shepherd was able to be the entire game.

The visitors battled hard in the early second half and trailed, 47-44, before six-straight WJU points. A Gavin McTavish triple made it a six-point, 53-47, deficit, but a Ritz layup and 3-pointer on back-to-back trips stymied any Shepherd comeback.

WJU heads on to the road the next two weeks with a Thursday night contest at UVa-Wise starts the swing. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
