Cardinals Suffers Tough Florida Tuesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – On day three of its Florida trip, the Wheeling Jesuit softball team suffered a pair of three-run defeats to University of Michigan-Dearborn, 8-5, and Gannon, 5-2, on Tuesday.

The Cardinals (3-3) held a 4-0 opener, before four Wolverines (5-1) scored in the home seventh for extra innings. Michigan-Dearborn outscored WJU, 4-1, in the eighth for the win. WJU battled back to within 3-2, but it was unable to get any closer to Gannon.

Cassie Holstein sliced three singles, while Victoria Scott, Molly Welsh and Michaela Miller lined two hits each for the Cardinals attack.

WJU has Wednesday to relax before it faces Lake Erie at 9 a.m. and Kentucky Wesleyan in a 2 p.m. single game on Thursday, March 2.

vs. Michigan-Dearborn

WJU jumped on top in the top of the third when Morgan Stohlman walked and scored on a fielder's choice. Scott added a RBI sac ground out for a 2-0 lead. Jackie Cramer drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth and Kelsi Thompson lined a run-scoring, fifth-frame hit for a 4-0 advantage.

The Wolverines took advantage of three Cardinals errors in the home seventh and tied the game, 4-4.

Welsh singled home Dana Achille, who started on second base in the top of the eighth. UM-Dearborn answered with a run to tie, before a three-run home run ended the game, 8-5.

"We got a few runs on the board and relaxed. In this game, you can't relax. You have to play a whole seven innings. This game keeps you honest, and if you let up, it'll get you," pointed out WJU head coach Sara Pelegreen.

vs. Gannon

The Lady Knights went out to a 3-0 lead with a pair in the second and a run in the third.

In the home fourth, Scott and Mallory Chapman singled. Thompson sacrificed both runners, before Courtney Rogers drove in the first WJU run. With two out, Miller slapped a RBI hit to pull the Cardinals to within 3-2.

Gannon added single scores in the fifth and sixth for the 5-3 final.

"Hats off to Gannon. They are a great hitting team and they took advantage of our mistakes (three errors). That's what good teams do. We played hard, but they played harder," said Pelegreen.
