WJU Baseball Loses Pair of Close Outings to Tiffin

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – In the second day of the Wheeling Jesuit baseball team's spring training, the Cardinals dropped two close contests to the Tiffin Dragons, 3-2 and 10-8.

Game 1:
In the first game of Mondays' doubleheader, Tiffin (4-4) struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Cardinals (0-4) would not go down without a fight.

Matthew Angelini began the final inning with a base hit before Cody Hudson later singled, advancing Angelini to second. Adam Dennison reached on an error, scoring Angelini and moving Hudson up one base. Hudson later crossed the plate, but WJU would strand the game-tying run, falling to Tiffin 3-2.

Kyle Rees took the loss, throwing five innings and allowing two earned runs. Rees struck out three and walked one.

Six Cardinals finished game one with a base hit – Drake May, Logan Schickler, Angelini, Dalton Davis, Hudson, and Ryan Blessard.

Game 2:
Tiffin scored one in the top half of the first before WJU hung three runs on the board in the bottom of the inning.

May led off with a double to left field before Angelini singled him over to third. Michael Finch walked and RJ Harris singled, scoring both May and Angelini. TJ Jacob later reached on an error, bringing Finch across home plate.

Tiffin responded with four runs in the top of the second, regaining the lead, 5-3.

Wheeling Jesuit would score one in the third and four in the fifth, pulling ahead 8-5. Carter Sancomb drew a lead off walk, and Harris later singled to left. Dennison was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded for Jacob. Jacob singled to first, bringing home the first of four Cardinal runs in the fifth. Christopher Minder singled to right field, bringing in another pair of runs. May would cap the scoring with another base hit, putting WJU ahead by three, 8-5.

Tiffin added one run in the sixth and four in the seventh to outlast WJU, 10-8.

The Cardinals finished with nine hits, led by two each from Jacob, Harris, and May. Angelini, Grimes and Minder added the three remaining base hits. Harris and Minder each tallied two RBI's.

Brian Shaw took the loss for the Cardinals in game two, completing 3.1 innings while allowing four hits and five earned runs.
