Cardinals Outlast Redhawks in Home Opener

WHEELING, W.Va. - The Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team took care of business in Sunday's home opener. The Cardinals used a 4-0 run over a four-minute span midway through the second half to take a 10-6 lead, and would go on to win, 11-10, over Roberts Wesleyan College.
 
Freshman Hayley Holmquist scored two of the four Cardinal goals during the run, and finished the game with a team best three goals.
 
WJU (1-1) and Roberts Wesleyan (0-2) played the first eight minutes of action to a deadlocked score of 0-0. Ally Coggins would kick off the Cardinal scoring with 21:46 in the first, as Kori Hickman found Coggins for the go-ahead strike.
 
Holmquist's first score of the game (21:23) put the Cardinals ahead 2-0 before Taylor Booth found the back of the net to take a 3-0 lead.
 
The Redhawks would respond with a 3-0 spurt of their own, tying the match with 6:28 remaining in the opening half.
 
WJU claimed the first score of the second half as senior Mary Burns scored just 31 seconds into the half, regaining the host's advantage. Paige Plesich assisted on Burns' score and later added her own goal at 25:56, putting WJU ahead, 6-4.
 
Roberts Wesleyan would once again fight back, knotting the contest at six all before the WJU streak began.
 
Holmquist started and ended the 4-0 run with her pair of goals while Elizabeth Hales and Kori Hickman scored the middle pair of goals. Over the final 19 minutes of play, WJU would score once more, as Markie Wright found the back of the net with 12:03 on the clock. The Cardinals would maintain their advantage and go on to win the match, 11-10.
 
Hickman led WJU with four points, scoring once and assisting on three goals. Hales and Holmquist each finished with three points. Plesich and Burns both scored a goal and assisted on another.
 
Wright, Booth, and Coggins all scored a goal for the Cardinals while Olivia Krock and Kate Calder added one assist.
 
Lyndsay Carpenter finished with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Brianna Wahle added a ground ball to the Cardinals defensive stats. Holly Deckert picked up two ground balls and forced one turnover.
 
The Cardinals travel to Melbourne, Florida to take on Florida Tech on March 1.
