Burns’ Layup Sends Cardinals Past ‘Toppers

WTRF Game Highlghts
WHEELING, W.Va. –
The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team honored its four seniors Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinals welcomed the Hilltoppers of West Liberty into the McDonough Center.

Monica Burns made the shot that the Cardinals needed the most, as Mo drove past the Hilltopper defense and scored what would be the game-winning layup with 1.8 seconds on the clock. WJU outscored the 'Toppers by nine in the final period of play, clinching a 59-58 victory.

"I could not be happier to get this win for our seniors," expressed WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "We now have momentum going into the tournament. We were poised when things were not looking promising, and we were able to pull it out. What a wonderful feeling this is!"

WJU's largest lead of the first quarter was the final score at the end of the period, 19-15. Senior Lydia Hyburg capped the first quarter scoring with a last-possession layup.

Six minutes into the second quarter, West Liberty knotted the contest at 25 all.

At the 1:21 mark, Brandi Beader hit a three to put the 'Toppers ahead by four, but the Cardinals would cut the lead to three heading into the half.

With 4:11 in the third, West Liberty would extend its lead to a game-high nine points.

Lydia Hyburg helped the Cardinals chip away at the 'Topper lead, making a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession. Hyburg would cap the third period scoring, charting the final six points for WJU and pulling WJU to within four. West Liberty managed to hit another three late in the fourth, and led heading into the fourth by seven, 47-40.

WJU began the fourth and final period on a 9-0 run, jumping ahead 49-47. Midway through the fourth period, the Cardinals maintained the advantage, leading 52-50.

The Cardinals fell behind, 57-54, with a minute and a half to play. On the next trip down the court, Senior Chelsea Richardson knocked in her most important shot of the season, a trey to tie the contest at 57.

The Hilltoppers made one free-throw down the stretch before Burns converted her layup with 1.8 seconds on the clock, solidifying the Cardinals victory.

Chenelle Moore and Lydia Hyburg led the way with 12 points apiece. Moore collected 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Jaana Motton added 11 points and five rebounds in 29 minutes. Kylie Frizell and Chelsea Richardson each scored seven points. Burns finished with six points while Mariah Callen chipped in four.
