Cardinals Run Past Rams, Advance to MEC Semifinals

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A pair of runs in the second and third quarters helped the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals separate from the Shepherd Rams and advance to Saturday's Mountain East Conference semifinals.

The second seeded Cardinals held Shepherd to 11 points in the second and third quarters, growing their fourth quarter lead to 14 points.

WJU's largest lead of the contest was the deciding margin, 29 points. The Cardinals claimed the quarterfinal contest 78-49 over Shepherd.

"I thought we played a tremendous second half," WJU Head Coach Debbie Buff remarked. "Our defense was outstanding. All year we talk about going with what is working that day on offense, but our defense always remains. That's what we pride ourselves on. We're excited to be moving on."

A trio of three point plays proved to be the difference in deciding the first period. When Shepherd pulled ahead, 7-4, first team All-MEC honoree Monica Burns buried the Cardinals first long distance shot of the game.

The Rams would go ahead, 15-11, before Kylie Frizell converted a three, pulling WJU to within a point. The Cardinals would complete a 6-0 period ending run with a Chelsea Richardson and-one layup. WJU took a 17-15 advantage into the second.

Chenelle Moore scored the first bucket of the second quarter, putting WJU ahead 19-15. The Rams, however, rattled off the next nine points, taking a 24-19 lead. With 3:43 remaining in the period, Shepherd led by five points, 26-21, but WJU would finish strong by way of an 11-0 run, taking a 32-26 lead into the break.

Callen stretched the WJU lead to eight, 38-30, with 5:12 in the third. The Cardinals charted a 13-7 run over the final five minutes of the third. Chenelle Moore pulled down a rebound and converted a successful put back as time expired, putting WJU ahead 51-37 going into the fourth quarter.

Moore converted another and-one play, this time with 7:31 in the fourth to send WJU ahead by 18, 57-39. Burns made both attempts from the line just 90 seconds later, growing the Cardinal lead to 19 points. Moore added a fast break layup at the 5:22 mark, helping WJU to its first lead of 20 or more, 65-44. A pair of Callen free throws grew the lead to 23, 67-44.

WJU held off the Rams down the stretch, clinching a spot in Saturday's semifinals.

Chenelle Moore led all WJU scorers with 19 points on 9-11 shooting. Moore also grabbed nine rebounds. Monica Burns finished with 13 points while Kylie Frizell scored 10. Mariah Callen and Jaana Motton each scored nine points.

Chelsea Richardson scored seven points. Kiarra Kamarec and Taliah Cashwell each made their only attempt from three in the game, finishing with three points apiece.

The Cardinals face Virginia Wise on Saturday, March 4 in the Charleston Civic Center. Tip is set for 2:15 p.m.
