Cards Fall at Griffins in Season Opener

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals fell to the Seton Hill Griffins in their 2017 season opener Friday afternoon.

"We came out of the gate pretty well," WJU head coach Tim Florence stated. "They kind of caught some fire and began to build a lead. We will make adjustments and work out the kinks for the future." 

WJU (0-1) took a brief 1-0 lead when Elizabeth Hales struck for the first goal of the Cardinals season, and senior Mary Burns regained WJU's advantage, 2-1, but the Griffins (1-0) rushed for the next five scores.
 
Hales scored her second goal in the 18th minute of action, pulling WJU to within three scores, 6-3. Seton Hill rattled off the final seven goals of the first half, taking a 13-3 lead into the break.
 
In the sixth minute of the second half, Hales struck for her third goal of the afternoon. Three minutes later, Elizabeth scored for the fourth time, pulling      WJU to within nine ,14-5.
 
With 16 minutes on the clock, freshman Hayley Holmquist scored her first collegiate goal, setting the score at 16-6 in favor of Seton Hill.
 
Seton Hill claimed the final four scores of the afternoon, solidifying a 20-6 victory.
 
Kori Hickman assisted on two scores while Hales assisted on another. Lyndsay Carpenter led the Cardinals with five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Holly Deckert finished with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Taylor Booth added two ground balls while Olivia Krock and Brianna Wahle each forced a turnover.
 
WJU returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 26 to host Roberts Wesleyan at noon.
