Hawks Late-Match Rally Overtakes Cardinals

WHEELING, W. Va. – Behind by four goals with 17 minutes left, Rockhurst turned the momentum and produced a late-match rally of six-straight scores to overtake Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse, 12-11, Sunday afternoon.

Leading 8-6 early in the third quarter, the Cardinals' (0-2) Dereck Downs found the net twice five minutes apart and pushed the home lead to 10-6 with 17:27 left in the match. The Hawks (4-0) fired the next six goals into the net over a 13:16 time frame and 12-10 new found lead, before they held on for the victory.

"(It was the) same story as last week. We just need to play better in the fourth quarter. We'll take a look at the film and figure this thing out. I'm looking forward to the next one," said Cardinals head coach Landon DelPrince.

Downs powered the WJU attack with four goals and an assist. Matt Lee and Jordan Getz netted a pair of assists apiece.

McLean Fitzmartin chipped in a goal and assisted on two others. Luke Gilman and Michael Stillings accounted for the final WJU goals, while Travis Getz and Joe Wright both had an assist.

Cardinals goalie Jake Lilly saved 14 Hawks shots.

Grant Vanoverbeke was the Rockhurst player of the game with three goals and three assists, including the game-winner with 10:40 left in the match.

Rockhurst registered a 22-14 second-half shooting advantage and 40-32 for the game. The Hawks also won 20 of 26 faceoffs.

Tied at 3-3, WJU put together four consecutive goals capped by Gilman's tally at 7:02 in the second quarter, for a 7-3 lead. Lee gave the Cardinals the momentum into the half with a score with two seconds left for the 8-5 intermission score.

WJU will travel for the first time in a noon match at Lenoir Rhyne next Saturday, Feb. 25.
