Cardinals Meet Pioneers in Battle for First Place

WHEELING, W.Va. - Wheeling Jesuit travels to Glenville State for a battle for control of first place in the Mountain East Conference. On January 10 in Wheeling, the Cardinals held the Pioneers to their lowest scoring night of the season, 66 points, on their way to a 79-66 victory. Jaana Motton led the Cardinals with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Monica Burns finished five of seven from the field for 20 points while adding five rebounds and four assists. Erika Toney, Courtney Davis and Julie Bishop finished in double figures for Glenville State.
 
Since the early January meeting, WJU holds an 8-2 mark including a current five game win streak. In the past week, the Cardinals have earned road victories at Virginia Wise and Concord. On the season, WJU is 9-3 on the road. The Cardinal defense continues to lead the MEC in scoring defense, holding their opponents to 60.8 points per contest. WJU has held 13 opponents to 60 points or less on the season. WJU ranks second in free throw percentage (75.9%) and field goal percentage (44.5%) while ranking first in field goal percentage defense (38.4%).
 
Monica Burns, a sophomore guard from New Stanton, Pennsylvania continues to guide the Cardinal offense. Burns averages 15.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, ranking sixth in the league in scoring. Mariah Callen, a junior point guard from Morgantown, West Virginia, assists on 4.7 scores per game while scoring 13.9 points of her own, ranking 12th in the MEC in scoring and fifth in assists. Jaana Motton, a senior forward from Columbus, Ohio supplies a double-double on average, 12.4 points and 10.0 rebounds. Motton has charted a conference best 11 double-doubles on the season.
 
Chenelle Moore adds 10.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while Kylie Frizell scores 8.9 points, collects 4.6 rebounds and dishes out 2.1 assists on average. Lydia Hyburg and Chelsea Richardson add 6.5 and 5.8 points, respectively.  
 
Glenville state enters Thursday with an 8-2 record over its last 10 games. In the 10-game stretch, the Pioneers have scored 90 or more points in five outings. As a club, Glenville averages a conference best 96.7 points per game while occupying a scoring margin of +20.7 points. Paris McLeod, the reigning MEC Player of the Week, averages 18.5 points per game. Brittany Jackson adds 10.2 and Odyssey Trussell chips in 10.0 points on average. Five additional Pioneers average between 8.3 and 9.8 points per game.
