No. 18 Lions Take Fourth Quarter, Escape Past Cardinals

WHEELING, W. Va. – In a tight contest throughout, No. 18 Molloy College spoiled the Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse season opener as it netted six of the final seven goals and escaped with an 11-9 Saturday afternoon victory.

Leading 6-5 at the half, Matt Lee and Dereck Downs scored once apiece as the Cardinals (0-1) opened an three-goal lead, 8-5, in the first 5:31 of the third period. The Lions (1-0) regrouped and grabbed the momentum in the final 21 minutes, including a 4-0 final quarter for the victory.

"It was a heartbreaking loss for us today. We have to find a way to eliminate the mental errors on both sides of the ball," said Cardinals head coach Landon DelPrince. "The game was ours going to into the fourth quarter and yet, we still found a way to beat ourselves. The best we can do is use this as a learning experience and get better for next weekend."

For the WJU offense, Lee and Downs added an assist to go with their two scores apiece. Gilman found the net twice, both in the opening period.

Trenton Kindall, Oscar Ortega and Michael Stillings all contributed a goal, while McLean Fitzmartin and Travis Getz had assists.

Connor Slane of Molloy led all scorers with four goals.

Jake Lilly saved 12 Lions shots in the Cardinals net.

After Gilman scored the opening goal only 2:16 into the match, the Lions put four in the back of the net starting only 13 seconds later for a 4-2 first quarter lead.

WJU answered with a strong second frame. Lee scored on a man-advantage, before Ortega, Kindall and Downs finished the first half with goals in the final 6:35 of the second quarter and 6-5 halftime lead.

Molloy won the faceoff battle, 15-9, including four of the five fourth-quarter challenges.

WJU entertains fellow Jesuit university Rockhurst next Sunday morning, Feb. 19, in an 11 a.m. match.

"Rockhurst is an up-and-coming team, and we cannot afford to take them lightly. We have to make each day count leading up to Sunday," wrapped up DelPrince.
