Burns Season High Sends Cards Past Falcons

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – In the final two minutes, Monica Burns sent the Cardinals to the victory. Wheeling Jesuit pumped in the opening seven fourth-quarter points of a tied game and never trailed in the final 10 minutes for the 62-58 hard-fought road win over Fairmont State.

Kylie Frizell drained a left-corner trey 11 seconds into the fourth period and she was followed by back-to-back Jaana Motton layups for a 49-42 WJU (17-4/12-3 Mountain East Conference) lead. The Falcons (12-9/9-6 MEC) pulled to within 54-52 at 3:17, but Lydia Hyburg made a pair and Burns was 6 for 6 from the charity stripe down the stretch and sent the Cardinals to victory.

"A huge win. We were 'Road Warriors.' Fairmont has a lot of skilled players and we really committed to defense for 40 minutes. It is Fairmont's first conference loss at home. I am so proud of our team for win number 17," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff.

With the win, WJU stays tied atop the MEC standings with Glenville State, which defeated Concord, 101-75.

Burns recorded a season-high 25 points, including 5 of 10 from 3-point range and 8 of 8 from the foul line.

Frizell downed 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Chelsea Richardson had a solid all-around game with six points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Motton added 10 rebounds and Mariah Callen dished six assists.

The Falcons were led by Emily Puskarich and Deidra Combs at 19 and 18 points.

Burns started the night hot with eight points in the first 10 minutes as WJU led 14-10 at the end of a stanza.

Callen began the second quarter with a three, but Fairmont State rushed back with the next 12 points for a 22-17 advantage at 5:35 before half. A Burns triple and Hyburg bucket made it a 27-25 deficit with three minutes left. Frizell downed a 3-pointer with 20 seconds as the Cardinals trailed 29-28 at intermission.

WJU took the third frame, 14-13, for a 42-42 deadlock into the final period.

After a quick three WJU baskets to start the fourth, Fairmont State hit back-to-back 3-pointers and pulled to within 49-48. A Callen trey made it 54-50, before the Cardinals were a perfect 8 of 8 from the foul line in the final two minutes. The Falcons missed multiple 3-pointers and Richardson blocked a final attempt at the end for the 62-58 win.

WJU returns to the McDonough Center for a Saturday, Feb. 4, contest with Shepherd. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
