No. 2 Falcons Hold Court Over No. 16 Cardinals

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – In a NCAA Division II Top 20 showdown, undefeated No. 2 Fairmont State held court over Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball, 97-86, Wednesday night.

After the visiting Cardinals (17-4/11-4 Mountain East Conference) held an eight-point lead late in the first half, the Falcons (21-0/15-0 MEC) went on a 16-3 run for a 36-31 advantage. Fairmont State netted the opening two second-half buckets and never let WJU closer than three points in the second half.

"Our team needs to focus on doing the little things. We did not take care of the ball and that was the difference in the game. We have to get back to doing what we do well.  Fairmont did what they do well," stressed WJU head coach Danny Sancomb.

The Cardinals dominated the glass, 46-23, but they failed to take care of the ball with 22 turnovers to the Falcons' five.

Haywood Highsmith made his presence felt on the Cardinals frontcourt with 17 points on 8 of 13 shooting and 19 rebounds, 13 defensive. He also added a pair of assists and two blocks.

Jarin Hilson downed three treys as part of a 7 for 14 evening for 19 points. Pat Moseh chipped in 15 points on 7 of 14 tries and grabbed six boards.

Preston Boswell and Kyle Ritz, who had seven rebounds, also were in double figures with 14 and 10 points.

Matt Bingaya and Vontae Montgomery paced the Fairmont State offense with 25 and 19 points.

WJU started strong in the opening half. After a Dominique Tham offensive rebound, he dished to Moseh for a layup and 14-10 lead. Tied at 18 with 11:00 on the clock, Hilson downed a left-wing triple and drove around the lane for a layup and finished a 10-2 spurt with another 3-pointer for the 28-20 lead.

Following a home timeout, the Falcons scored the next eight points and turned the game around with the 16-3 run over a five-minute period for a 36-31 lead at 1:35. A Highsmith jumper in the paint made it a four-point, 41-37, intermission deficit.

After trailing by nine points, 50-41, early in the second half, WJU made a run. Moseh nailed a turnaround jumper as the Cardinals doubled up the Falcons, 12-6, from that point for a 56-53 score with 12:07 remaining.

Fairmont State reasserted itself with a 10-3 spurt and the first double-digit lead, 66-56. WJU made it no closer than 11 points in the final seven minutes until the 97-86 final.

WJU aims to bounce back Saturday afternoon, Feb. 4, in a 4 p.m. home game against Shepherd.
