Cardinals Record Solid Home Win over Rams

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Cardinals made sure their lead held on Saturday. A Cassi Stein layup opening the second quarter gave Wheeling Jesuit a lead it enjoyed over the final 29:29 of the day on its way to a 63-56 victory over Shepherd University.

The Cardinals (3-6/2-4 Mountain East Conference) ran out of halftime to a tune of 10-0 burst in the first 3:53 of the third quarter for a 39-26 advantage. The Rams (5-5/2-4 MEC) cut the difference to five points with 1:38 in the third frame and again with 38 seconds in the game, but a pair of Monica Burns free throws iced the home victory.

"Outstanding team effort on both sides of the ball for us today. Shepherd is a good basketball team and we played with energy for 40 minutes and shared the ball," said Cardinals head coach Debbie Buff. "Cassi (Stein) was tremendous as a leader and communicated to me throughout the game. Freshman Sadera Johnson stepped up and played like a veteran. Cassi and Sadera were stellar on defense. Chenelle (Moore), Mo (Burns) and Mariah (Callen) played like veterans."

After being out for over a year with injuries, Stein has come on in the early season. The senior contributed eight points, eight rebounds and two assists. Seeing her most action in one game this season, Johnson chipped in five points and had an assist.

Burns led WJU with 17 points, including 12 of 14 from the charity stripe, and six boards. Moore knocked down 7 of 11 from the floor for 15 points to go with eight caroms. Callen added 10 points and five assists.

Shepherd's Morgan Arden hit for 20 points and dished six assists to lead the visitors.

The two clubs played to a 19-19 first quarter deadlock. Stein's layup 32 seconds in the second frame and a later Callen triple gave WJU a six-point margin, 27-24, before it had a 29-26 intermission lead.

After the Cardinals ran up to its 13-point lead, the Rams ended the third quarter strong and cut the deficit to five points, 44-39. WJU still claimed a 47-40 lead after 30 minutes.

WJU heads back on the road for the first of its three non-conference games to end the season. The three games start Tuesday night, Dec. 12, in a 6 p.m. contest at Pitt-Johnstown.
