Cardinals Post Road Win over Mt. Cats

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Stepping out of conference play, the Cardinals proved to be successful Tuesday night. After being behind by double digits, Wheeling Jesuit turned the tables and posted the win over Pitt-Johnstown for the 75-69 women's basketball final.

Trailing 22-12 in the first 1:11 of the second quarter, the Cardinals ran off a game-changing 12-0 run with a Monica Burns 3-pointer to start it and a Mariah Callen trey ending it to make it 24-22. A Burns layup gave WJU its largest lead at 13 points, 65-52, with 3:46, before the visitors fended off UPJ (7-3) in the final seconds.

"Defensively, we were outstanding," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "Mariah and Mo combined for 45 points, and were exceptional. Pitt-Johnstown is a very good basketball team and they are the biggest team we have faced, It was a great non-conference team victory."

Callen and Burns combined for 45 points and 14 of 15 from the foul line. Callen connected on 8 of 9 attempts with a trio of 3-pointers, and 6 of 7 foul shots for a game-high 25 points. Burns added 20 points of her own, including all eight free throws and 6 for 6 in the final 29 seconds.

Chenelle Moore contributed 12 points on 6 of 12 shooting, eight rebounds and four steals. Lauren Lipscomb chipped in 10 points rounding out the scoring.

UPJ saw Gabrielle Smith hit for 20 points with 10 of 12 free throws to lead the home club.

The Cardinals made 12 of 19 second half shots at a 63% rate and 14 of their 15 charity stripe attempts.

The Mountain Cats started the night solidly with an eight-point lead, 20-12, where they netted seven of the final nine points of the opening 10 minutes.

After the 12-0 WJU second-quarter run, the two teams were tied twice. A Burns lay in with six seconds gave WJU a 35-32 intermission edge.

Capping a 7-0 spurt on a Moore layup, WJU enjoyed its first double-figure lead, 49-39, with 4:52 left in the third frame. A Lipscomb 3-pointer helped push the margin back to seven points, 56-49, at the end of the third.

Following Burns layup to make it 65-52, UPJ pulled back to within four points three times in the final 29 seconds. Burns held off the Mountain Cats comeback as she made all six foul shots in three trips to seal the win.

WJU returns home Saturday, Dec. 16, in a 4 p.m. contest against Gannon.
