WHEELING, W.Va. – Wheeling Jesuit revved up it motors midway through the second half and made its run to dispatch of Urbana University, 93-79, in Mountain East Conference men's basketball action.
The Blue Knights (0-7/0-4 MEC) edged ahead by a point, 59-58, on an Ethan Snapp 3-pointer with 11:52 left in the contest. The Cardinals (7-0/4-0 MEC) turned up the heat from that point with a 10-0 game-deciding run over the following 2:57 off two buckets by both Haywood Highsmith and Brent Pegram. WJU pushed it back its lead back to double figures for good at 78-68 with two Pat Moseh free throws and eased out the win.
"It was a solid team win. We did a good job offensively as Pat (Moseh) had a very good offensively to start the game as he was very aggressive," said Cardinals head coach Danny Sancomb. "Haywood was able to get it going in the second half. Brent Pegram was very big for us as he was great defensively, made some shots and was the difference in the second half. We do, though, need to be much better defensively."
Moseh and Highsmith highlights the home team scoring with 25 points apiece. Moseh was 7 of 10 from the floor and 11 of 17 from the charity stripe for his 25, while he added seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Highsmith connected on 8 of 10 from the field and 8 of 9 foul shots to equal the 25 points. The senior forward contributed 11 rebounds for his seven double-double go go with four assists, five blocked shots and three steals.
Pegram had his highest point total of the year with 15 points, including a pair of triples. Jeremiah Wilson had 12 points and six rebounds and Ryan Cooper eight tallies.
WJU had a commanding edge at the foul line where it was 38 of 48, which outscored Urbana's total made by 26.
Urbana put four players in double figures with Chris Jackson's 16 leading its effort.
WJU plays defending MEC champion Fairmont State on the road Wednesday night, December 6, starting at 7:30 p.m.
