Fairmont State Outlasts WJU in Men’s Hoops Classic

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – A March-level classic played in early December. Two Mountain East Conference heavyweights slugged it out all night until Fairmont State's Jason Jolly buried back-to-back 3-pointers and outlasted Wheeling Jesuit, 78-74, Wednesday night.

Following a pair of Pat Moseh free throws to make it a five-point WJU (7-1/4-1 MEC) advantage, 63-58, at 5:26 on the clock. After a home bucket, Jolly knocked down two-straight treys and added two free throws in an 10-2 run over 2:43 time frame as Fairmont State (6-2/4-1 MEC) regained the lead 68-65. Moseh hit a six-foot leaner in the lane to cut the WJU deficit to a point, 70-69, at 1:07, but it was unable to regain the lead in the final minute.

"Fairmont deserved to beat us tonight as we did not play as a team tonight," stressed WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We have to move the ball around better then we did today. We need to be better with the 50-50 balls and have to understand what makes us a good team.'

Continuing his early season pace, Haywood Highsmith scored 20 of his 23 points and grabbed seven of his 15 rebounds for his NCAA Division II-leading eighth double-double in as many nights. The senior made 10 of 18 from the field with a trio of 3-pointers.

Moseh also had a big second half with 14 of his 18 points in the final 20 minutes. Preston Boswell added 14 points and swiped three balls.

Jeremiah Wilson missed his second double-double by one as he finished with 10 points on 5 of 8 shooting and nine rebounds. Brendan Hoban chipped in seven points, including his final bucket in the final eight seconds to pull his team back to within three points.

Jolly pumped in a game-best 30 points for the home Falcons to lead all scorers.

After trailing by 11 points midway through the first half, the Cardinals were able to cut the margin in half by intermission, 33-27.

WJU continued its charge in the second half. The Cardinals kept pulling to within a single score until Highsmith laid in an offensive rebound for a 43-42 advantage at 12:19 remaining. After a Jolly 3-point play put the Falcons back on top, 48-45, the Cardinals answered with the next seven tallies capped by five-straight Boswell points to make it 52-48 at 9:43 left.

A Highsmith offensive rebound and putback gave WJU its largest lead of the night, 56-50, at 8:19. The visitors led by five points two times in the next few minutes, 61-55 and 63-58, before Jolly rallied the FSU troops.

The Cardinals committed an uncharacteristic 18 turnovers, but they did outrebound the Falcons, 37-32.

WJU aims to rebound at home on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 9, in a 4 p.m. contest against Shepherd.
